Welcome to TextFugu!
I too studied Shorin-Ryu, but for only about a year. I originally studied Shotokan, but I moved to a place that had no Shotokan dojo, so I took Shorin-Ryu until I could find another Shotokan dojo. If I hadn’t already graded so high in Shotokan I likely would have kept with Shorin-Ryu until I at least got my shodan. But that was a long time ago now. ^_^
If you really want to study Kanji in a more complete, easier, more enjoyable fashion, I highly recommend WaniKani. It is designed by the same person who created TextFugu, Koichi. It is a system specifically designed for Kanji and in a manner that resembles a game, with levels of progression.
This system was designed after he made the Kanji material here, and was meant as a successor to it. The total Kanji contained in it is 1,678, based on Koichi’s determinations of the most commonly encountered Kanji in the native wild.
You can find the link to it with a 50% discount for the subscription fee here:

The site’s kind of weird at the moment, you have to sign up with your e-mail address and then wait for a link invite. The first two levels are free, so you can try before you buy. ^_^

There is a technical terms dictionary in the last link.
Hopefully it will contain what you are looking for. ^_^

Wish = Command
I just started a thread for this and have used this as the first entry.
Here’s the thread: http://www.textfugu.com/bb/topic/common-errors-in-textfugu/
Could one of you provide the location of this within TF and Tsety can you check and make sure my entry for this is accurate?
(I should probably spend more time actually completing TF than making help threads, but I can’t help myself. >_<)
We recently had a discussion about this over on the WaniKani forums, and there is some precedence for this.
Apparently many foreigners living in Japan have adopted a Kanji version of their name and use it on their hanko. One of the reasons for this is to avoid the ingrained prejudiced afforded to foreigners when writing letters, as a Japanese reader would have no obvious indication they were dealing with a foreigner.
This would be like a Japanese guy in a Western country who gives his name as John, an adopted western name.
That said, this is a very specific circumstance, so as Joel said, probably safer to go katakana unless you know a lot about the ins and outs of this.
And if you do use Kanji for your name, make sure you run it by a native Japanese or someone really knowledgeable, in order to make sure the combinations express what you think they do, both in reading and meaning.
It’s done through the site called Gravatar. If you use the same e-mail address to register there and upload an avatar it will update your avatar here automatically.

Welcome to TextFugu!
Is there a story behind the Kanji for your name?

December 24, 2013 at 12:26 am in reply to: TextFugu Season Completions for Great Motivation of Heart! #42903Thanks for the suggestions. I used to be a TESOL teacher, so yeah I’m aware of the tricks of the trade and starting as early as possible.
The problem for me is time constraints. I’m working towards a PhD in psychology and I’m currently on summer break, so I want to get through as much of TextFugu as I can during the break. Once my break is over I won’t have time to look at TextFugu, but I can practice the stuff I’ve learned to that point with things like lang-8.
-Cheers and Merry Christmas to all! ^_^
Welcome. ^_^
Yeah Imabi will be my next stop once I finish TextFugu.

We actually don’t have a PM system on this forum… >_>
