Regardless of exact definitions, I do feel like I have a better understanding of them from reading this thread. So thanks for the responses. ^_^
I haven’t seen snow in 10 years. :(

April 1, 2014 at 5:00 pm in reply to: Kanji has me confused. Help would be appreciated greated. #44702I think one of the big problems is that the kanji you learn in your kanji deck are rarely ever used in the way you see them. As ON readings are usually combined without Kanji, not by themselves. If by themselves they are usually the KUN readings. So:
Kanji+Kanji = On
Kanji = Kun
Kanji+Hiragana = KunThat’s the standard template, but there are enough exceptions to this to drive you mad. Like when you have a Kanji+Kanji which should use ON readings, but one of the Kanji is for a body part, so now they both use their KUN readings.

Try out WaniKani. This is what Koichi made after starting the Kanji here. The first two levels are free. Even if you don’t end up using it, it may help you sort it out mentally, as they color code things.

Sounds like a good plan. ^_^
There’s quite a few of us Aussies on the board.

Yes, I believe you are misunderstanding what he’s put. But you’re also right in that it’s not a good explanation.
That said, I think it would work at a very basic level, but it ends up being much more complicated than that, which is why it’s never explained well.
I thoroughly believe this is one of those things where detailed explanations aren’t that helpful, and you really have to pick it up through osmosis. Using the above, I think, would be a fair starting point to go by, but you’ll have to expand it from there through experience.

Is Sea Shepherd something that has to do with the whaling industry?Yeah that’s exactly what I thought it was.

Is that where the commas go when Japanese write out numbers?
LOL, was wondering if that was my new code name. ^_^
I wouldn’t expect him to answer. He rarely looks at these forums these days. From what I gather he gets depressed coming here as he’s reminded of all the horrible stuff he has to fix, so instead focuses on doing the new stuff.
Getting regular updates from Koichi is like finding water in the desert. It happens occasionally, especially if you know exactly where to look (multiple sites), but it’s rare.
From all that I have read I wouldn’t expect anything viewable until next year.
