    If you search using the kanji on Jisho, it lists two words that use the same symbols; おおがら for large build, and おおへい for arrogance. Only the former is listed as a na-adjective, which might distinguish it in use…

    Hard to find examples of おおへい on ALC though, does anyone know a more common term for something like arrogance? 横柄 is sugested by Jisho, and has a similar reading; おうへい.

    Not bad. Bit too far for conversation practise, but we might see each other at the Japanessse language group in Bristol (if I ever decide to go).

    I’ve been thinking recently that it would be good to have some kind of world map for TextFugu, where people can place a marker for useful resources and even themselves if they should choose to do so (I guess some website probably exists for that already?). As an example; the central showroom for ‘Japanese Kitchen’ (an online shop for Japanese ingredients) is based just outside Stroud, took me a year to find that out.

    Anyway, welcome!

    Nice to meet you Phil.

    What area are you from? Stroud, Gloucestershire here (boasting at least two TextFuguers so far).

    Light novels (I’ve bough some other novels but don’t want to start them until I can read more naturally). The shipping costs are murder, but if you buy a load at once with combined shipping they work out about the same price as novels bought from a bookshop in England. I really want a back issue of Dengeki Bunko Magazine from January 2012, there is a short story based on「月光」in there, but the only sources are Amazon marketplace sellers, and you can’t order off those without setting up a mail forwarding thing.

    I extensively read a page or more, and then intensively translate it into proper English. Recognising kanji is what comes first with this method, but most of the time I end up looking up the readings over and over… I don’t think it’s very efficient, but it’s fun and keeps my atttention.

    Definetly not a consistant 3 hours a day, I study when I feel like it.

    I count things like; Actively reading, flashcards, grammar workbooks, JPod 101, and (just recently) actively trying to decipher spoken Japanese on TV.

    I do not count; Anime, randomly speaking to myself in Japanese while doing other things, or reading blogs on Japanese culture.

    Most of what I’ve been doing since christmas is intensive reading, and even though it has helped solidify sentence structures and grammar beyond my expectations, the amount of vocabulary I’ve been picking up is a fraction of what I could have done on Anki. I just can’t seem to muster the motivation to keep up the flashcards now…

    Btw, I do experience burnout syndrome, but have been pushing the limit up for years while studying various things. On a good day it takes over 8hrs for my brain to fry now.

    I’ve been aiming for 1000hrs a year, but only made ~750 in my first year. It’s still early, but I’m on track to beat that so far. Most of what I’m doing now is intensive reading…… even though I would be better off with dedicated vocabulary building (my Anki is a neglected disaster area). Actual reading is just so much more fulfilling.

    To answer your questions; You might have missed something saying that 一人 has an special reading (I can’t remember whether that something exists or not). As far as I can tell, your not an idiot. Well, now you know. Things like that happen even when you follow the instructions. The rule is that the word 一人 just has that reading, it’s an exception (二人 has a special reading too, but from 三人 they follow the normal ’rules’).

    Somehow, I feel like my crazyness has been undermined since you only mentioned Joel.

    Might be better to call that a prologue.

    Nice to meet you. Quite the exiting turn of events, have fun in Japan and be sure to keep us posted while you’re there.

    I and a few other American scholars were at a party and one of us tried to compliment our Japanese host by saying, 今晩はおいしいものがたくさんありますね。 By this he intended to say, “What a lot of tasty dishes you’re serving us tonight.” The host laughed and remarked, “You mean I’m usually stingy on other nights?”

    -_- I think I need to be more careful with my は usage…

    If you fail; eat the game cartridge, and as much of the console as you can stomach.

    You can take it apart first, but be sure to consume all the pieces. Film it and put it on Youtube for us to laugh at. (and give me lots of money while your at it).

    Don’t worry, they’re actually orca in disguise. I stopped using the Textfugu mnemonics, making up ones own is fun and more effective.

    You could try emailing Koichi to get him to change it (as I doubt the forums will be of much use).

    I can’t get anything to play on that link… do you have to sign in to the website or something?

    Anyway, here’s something nice;

    And something funky;
