ください tends to be more “please do something for me”. It’s got more (and less) formal versions as well – the order is something like くれ -> くれませんか -> ください -> くださいませんか -> いだたけませんか

おねがいします is just a more general “please”.

I’ve been once. Almost seven years ago, now…

Actually, we’re just starting the planning for a group trip for my university society in maybe December or January, but getting people to commit to it is… difficult.

    There’s this: http://www.textfugu.com/dl/

I seem to recall the size of the ultimate nouns deck is a bit… underwhelming, though I confess I haven’t checked in a while.

    Congrats!

Ironically, Tofugu just recently released a podcast about using a holiday to Japan to study Japanese. =)

Did you take any pictures to show off? =P

After WaniKani became the cash cow, the other Tofogu projects magically began to decline.

    More like, cash crabi-gator…

The big rule in Japanese is that all rules have exceptions – including this one.

There ain’t no hard-and-fast way of telling which verb is in which group, save that you’ll simply get the feel for it after a while. But yeah, if you go ~る to ~ます, you’ll be right most of the time. One trick I find is that if you change the ~る to ~ます and the resultant combination sounds weird, then you did it wrong. For example, はしる -> はします sounds odd. (Though, in all fairness, that could simply be because I’m expecting はしります.)

In hindsight, I remember other people having the same issue for the same reason. Maybe I should keep that in mind for future reference. =P

Hmm, that’s odd. Try a different browser?

Have you got a link for a specific page that’s giving you issues?

As I understand it, Koichi decided to re-do the Fugu part of EtoEto over from scratch. Soooo… yeah. Use TextFugu until EtoEto is done. Which should be sometime this century, for sure. Probably.

Nah, WaniKani is intended to replace TextFugu’s kanji section. If you come across a kanji you don’t know yet in a later lesson, it’s easy enough to just look up that kanji.

You could give the Genki 2 or Nakama 2 textbooks a shot. Or maybe even Tobira, though that could be a bit too much of a step up from TextFugu. Or wait for Koichi to release EtoEto, which should be sometime this century for sure.

Here’s another thread on the topic from a few years back: http://www.textfugu.com/bb/topic/what-is-nextsoon-to-be-done-with-textfugu/

Whoa, next week? Lucky. Where are you going?

I feel confident about using Japanese in public… until it comes time to actually use it. When I’m actually standing in front of someone trying to speak in Japanese, all of my knowledge suddenly runs away and hides. Plus, my listening ability still sucks…
