ルイ: Yeah, it was all dramatic effect, a way of explaining modern-day scientific advances couched in a sci-fi-ish story – you notice that every time he started explaining what he was about to do, he’d say “based on something from the early twenty-first century”. To be honest, I actually found the storyline a bit creepy…
For some of us, spring is a long way away. Mind you, I’m not exactly sure where summer got to either – it’s pouring with rain right now.
Adam Savage ran out of long-term memory in the twenty-seventh century or so. He invented a sort of external memory device for his brain – though, since earth’s civilization had been wiped out by that asteroid in the twenty-fourth century, he had to do it on his own, using whatever he could scrounge from a twentieth century bunker. It worked, too – as we all know, he’s currently the human race’s first thousand-year-old man. =)
Isn’t it fun what you learn on the Discovery Channel?
The way I learnt ね is that it’s a guy holding out a net – you can see the little fishy caught in the corner.
Yah, did you actually try it, Michael? I thought it was just a search-your-own-posts function myself when I first discovered it, but when I actually ran a search, I wound up with results from everyone.
On the iPad, it takes two clicks to activate those links. I suspect hashi’s already noticed, though. =)
As I’ve mentioned a couple of times in the past, there is a search function, it’s just well-hidden. Scroll to the bottom and hit “Profile”, then in the page that pops up, click “Topics” or “Replies” on the sidebar (which one you click will change whether it returns the results as topics or replies). Then the search box is on the right-hand side, above the list of topics/replies.
The text has gone all teensy on my iPad. It’s not auto-resizing to fill the screen, or something.
January 24, 2012 at 3:37 pm in reply to: The "I found some Japanese I don't understand" thread. #25338It’s this one: http://www.textfugu.com/season-2/being-possessive/practice/ – seventh sentence down or so, これ は わたし の えんぴつ です。
I’ll grant it does sound somewhat like おたし, but I’m gonna peg that one up to audio artefacts or simply a native speaker speaking quickly – it’s unquestionably supposed to be わたし.
I’m kinda jealous that you could climb the scaffolding at Himeji. When I was there in August 2010, we could only look on from the ground. That said, did you go and look at all the peripheral buildings? Were they still open? Though not quite so awesome as the main keep, they were still quite interesting in their own right.
Good luck with that. I’ve read around the place (though I don’t know if it’s a general truth or just that person’s impression) that mental health care in Japan is lacking. Both in availability and in… I guess “necessity (in the eyes of the general public)” is the idea I’ve got in mind, but I can’t quite recall the word.
豕 is one of the ones I leant backwards – that is, I learnt that 家 is a pig under a roof (back when I was studying Chinese at school) and I’ve thus remembered that 豕 is the pig radical.
Do you eat curry with chopsticks? I have a mental image of a spoon being involved.
ですぅぅぅ~
Yah, I use Kotoba. In my defense, my Kenkyusha is out of arm’s length. Plus, it’s under stuff.
That said, having checked it, neither パチリ nor ぱっちり are there anyway.
