Yah, if you check out the dashboard, he’s just done an update of all the decks. You either stick with what you’ve got and add bits on a regular basis, or start over with the new ones, I suppose.

I couldn’t really say, to be honest. I don’t think we ever really had a budget in mind.
We went there basically knowing exactly how much the hotels were going to cost, and having already paid for the airfares and JR Pass. We made an educated guess for how much our day-to-day expenses would be, and went with that. I wound up going to a 711 ATM on the very first night we arrived because I spent like a quarter of the cash I’d brought with me on the taxi that we caught when we thought we’d missed the last train for the day. With that money, plus $US 500 my grandparents gave me, I wound up spending about ¥4500 per day, and took home a little over ¥22,000.
To be fair, though – and to address missingno’s concerns of overestimating, we didn’t go there to shop. I think we each spent maybe ¥10,000 or thereabouts on souvenirs and that was pretty much it, so I guess if you’re planning on shopping, you can crank the estimate up a bit. Also, the Aussie dollar was pretty strong against the US dollar at the time (though not as strong as it was when I went to America in November =P) so we were getting something in the range of 82 to 85 yen to the dollar. I don’t honestly recall the exchange rate exactly.

Yah, the 1 and the 3 are switched. There’s a few others that aren’t in handwriting-form, too, and that ふ and り are just confusing.

That said, I’m going to have to disagree with one thing Hattori said – に does have a wider use than へ, but へ is always used for direction of travel (not location). It’s always translated as “to” or “towards” or (in occasional situations) “into”.
The particle in “eat at a restaurant” would be で…

Get a JR Pass if you’re going to do a lot of Shinkansen travel. Check out http://www.japanrailpass.net – there’s lists showing where you can buy them (and they need to be bought before you leave your home country); just ignore the airline sellers and scroll down to the travel agent lists.
If you want to work out whether a JR Pass is worth it, http://www.hyperdia.com will show you how much your rail travel will be otherwise. And, for that matter will also help you get from place to place once you’re there. Also, the peace of mind offered by the JR Pass is amazing. =)
If you want to stay somewhere that doesn’t have a friend to put you up for the night business hotels are cheap and quite nice – I suggest Toyoko Inn, which has branches practically everywhere, cost just eight thousand yen or so a night, and give free Internet and breakfast. http://www.toyoko-inn.com

It’s great that you actually live in Japan. Nagoya is my city’s sister city, though I only passed through when I was in Japan in 2010 – all the guidebooks were a bit “meh” about it. How are you finding it? And how was Kyoto? Did you see lots of the temples, or were you busy doing other things?
On the subject of mistranslated foods, Pokemon was rather notorious for turning onigiri into… donuts, if memory serves.
Another one that bugs me is badly transliterated proper nouns…
Edit: Just had a closer read of your post, Yuuma, and… okonomiyaki sandwich? Ew?

I went on my own in August-September 2010, and even though I didn’t know much Japanese at the time, I managed on just a phrasebook and charades. I’d heartily recommend the opposite advice to James – don’t, by any means, limit yourself to just Tokyo. The country has so much to offer. I’d recommend every place I visited. Except maybe Osaka Castle.
I can’t really speak for tours – I went on one with a school group to China way way back in 1998, but I don’t really remember much of what I thought of it how I felt after it – but for me, going to Japan with a friend on our own, being able to choose where we wanted to go, was kinda fun. I will say this, though: my friend and I went for two weeks, and we each spent $AUS 3333. That’s in total, including airfares, food, hotels and the JR Pass – everything. Read into that what you will. =) (Mind you, to be fair, the airfare from Australia to Japan is probably cheaper than Indiana to Japan.)

Yah. It’s particle は, as in “今日は… implied something something”. Ditto for こんばんは (=今晩は).
