    Welcome!

You’ll tend to find that everything is written partially in hiragana. =P

食べやすい is an adjective. =) There’s actually a fair few constructs which attach onto verb stems and turn them into adjectives – for example, 食べやすい, 食べにくい, 食べたい, 食べそう, et cetera.

カツ丼 is the subject of the clause rather than the object of a verb, so it should take が, not を – however, since it’s also the topic of the sentence, は is replacing the が.

Basically, TextFugu will become the basic component of EtoEto, WaniKani will be the intermediate bit, and a new section called Kuma will be the advanced bit. If memory serves. It’s still the same guy writing everything, though, so I don’t really forsee a great overhaul in the general tone and mood of everything.

One idea when it comes to verbs is to think about – or even do – the actual action while saying the verb. Instead of trying to tie a Japanese word to an English word (i.e. “well, 走る means ‘run’.”) what you should do instead is tie it to the action itself.

Maybe just stick with thinking about the action when it comes to learning 殺す, though. =P

You can do the same with nouns, of course – which is to say, they’re actual objects, not just words.

    Welcome back!

Fun suggestion: try finding a dual-language Japanese cookbook. I happen to live in a city with a Kinokuniya, and they’ve got a bunch of them – I picked up “The Book of Basic Japanese Cooking”, with recipies by 検見崎聡美 (Kemizaki Satomi, I think) and published by Shufunotomo.

Downside, though, is that it’s made me even more confused as to whether or not a negi is a spring onion. Doesn’t really help that “spring onion” refers to something completely different wherever you go.

I’m idly curious as to why. While there are some differences between female and male language in Japanese, the pronunciation is exactly the same.

Welcome! My city’s got a sister city in Japan too – it’s Nagoya, but my only visit there involved nothing more than changing trains at the station. =)

Aye, that’s the trick with memorising stuff – if Koichi’s mnemonics just aren’t working for you, don’t be afraid to just toss them out and come up with something that does work. The best method is always the method that works best for you.

    Aye, you wrote that right.

Welcome! I signed up for a similar reason, though we used Nakama in class. If you want another workbook to practice in, you might try looking into Japanese for Busy People, and for the grammar, I found the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar to be a big help.

The thing about English grammar is that you know perfectly well how it works – you’ve been using it all your life. You just couldn’t really explain it, and don’t really know all the technical terms, because you learnt to use it pretty much just by using it. That’s probably the case for anyone aside from professional linguists. When you learn a second language, though, you’re explicitly told exactly how the grammar works.

E-mail Koichi? hello@textfugu.com supposedly gets the fastest response, but you might try koichi@textfugu.com too
