Because other than 一人 and 二人, all uses of the 人 counter follow the same pattern of on’yomi+にん. With some minor exceptions (i.e. 四人 is よにん, because しにん sounds like 死人 which is “corpse”). It’s 一人 and 二人 that are the freaky exceptions, but Kouichi never seems to mention that.

ななにん is not completely unheard of, though (for example, the title of the manga 山田くんと七人の魔女 = “Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches” uses ななにん), but I think しちにん is somewhat more common. 七 is kind of odd in that its readings tend to be fairly interchangeable.

Welcome! Think by this point the only place without a Starbucks is the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. =)

On the subject of Yotsubato coming in the mail, if you live anywhere near a Kinokinuya (http://www.kinokuniya.com) then you can get manga in Japanese quite easily. Possibly a long shot, though – there’s only a handful of them outside of Japan. (I’m fortunate enough that I do live in a city with one.)

Welcome! I’m from Sydney, myself. Little jealous you go once a year – I’ve been once, full stop.

It helps to have a framework to hang things on, whether it’s mnemonics, or grammar to go with it, or even practice sentences.

Supposedly years matching your zodiac are unlucky for you. Dunno if that is the case for Japanese astrology as well, though, or just the Chinese.

    Welcome!

It’s always fun when you discover you’ve made more progress than you expected. I got ニノ国 on the DS, and was extremely surprised by how easily I was reading it. Sure, I regularly had to stop to look up new kanji, but I was making sense of the storyline with a fair amount of ease.

It all comes down to perspective!

Ah yes, perspective. A friend of mine once commented to me that he preferred anime to Western shows because it’s not as clichéd. I replied to him that anime is just as clichéd – they’re just different clichés, so we simply don’t recognise them – and then went on to prove it by exactly predicting the end of a 26-episode anime series after having watched just the first two episodes.
