Welcome! I’m in Australia, too – Sydney, to be precise.

That said, unless your name is pronounced quite differently to how I’d expect, it’s ミッチェル. =) Also, did you leave a few characters out of the third line? にほんご?

On a side note, ever heard of a British musician named Mike Oldfield? =)

    Welcome!

Small correction, Mitchell: いかが is “how” only in the sense of “how is this?” (i.e. “is it to your liking?”). Also, unlike English, “how are you” is not idle small-talk.

    Vocab or kanji?

My suggestion is that if Koichi’s suggested mnemonics aren’t doing it for you, try coming up with your own.

    Welcome!

e.g., the second kata, “ushiro” (うしろ)

    “Back”?

And then, one of the guys I work with use to be a big anime viewer, and I hadn’t seen any in ages, thinking it’s just for kids, to which he explained differently and then I found out differently…

That’s sadly a fairly typical assumption that most of “society” makes – confusing the medium with the genre. The misconception is somewhat aided by the fact that most US cartoons ARE for kids…

Welcome, all! I suspect I’m rather over the median age myself, but I’m not… quite in my sixties. =P

But yeah, some of Koichi’s mnemonics are a bit odd. Think the trick is to ignore them and come up with your own. =)

Practice, is all I can suggest. Practice, practice, practice.

But yeah, I’m with you – I can form sentences in my head all day long, but when I actually try to speak, I just forget everything. I get tongue-tied, too. Also, my listening ability sucks. =P

But you don’t need to wait for EtoEto’s shadowing lessons. You can already try shadowing on your own:

Huh, curious. Somehow I never noticed that.

Guess it does sound like a bit of work to write sentences yourself, but in some ways, doing it yourself is the best practice. And while the pronunciation is helpful, one of the clever tricks about Japanese is that everything’s always pronounced the same – there aren’t any weird exceptions like in English. Well, except for some of the particles…

Welcome! I’ve been thinking of getting a hold of Investigations 2 myself, actually…

It’s great that you’ve been twice – I’ve only gone once, myself. Where in particular did you go?

Welcome! It’s great that you’ll be able to visit Japan – it’s a spectacular place.

What, out of idle curiosity, is a spreadsheet monkey? =)

Welcome! As an added bonus, you’ll be able to play video games that don’t get released in English at all. =)
