Not completely certain, but if I were to hazard, I’d say that 支社 is a company’s branch office, while 支局 is the branch office of, say, a post office or a TV broadcaster, sort of thing. The first gets more Google results, either way, so it seems to be the more common.

I seem to recall someone else here commenting that he was a programmer with OCD tendencies, but who subsequently proceeded to use unbalanced paretheses in his post. =P

But yeah, the #top is annoying, especially after the update when it was first introduced where it broke a whole bunch of links.

Welcome! I’m in Sydney, too. =)

Don’t worry, Japan has a whole heap more history than Australia does. =P

Hmm. Good question. Think the narrator in the series I’ve been translating tends to use これ/それ. Not completely certain, though.

Ah, puns. I’ve been working on a translation of a drama series, and I try my best to retain the puns, but sometimes it’s a stretch, even in the original Japanese. =P

Welcome! Good luck with that. =)

Can’t say it’s overly surprising that textbooks tend to be student-related. =P

Aye. I read somewhere that English is the only language in which thesauruses are published – though I have to admit I have no idea whether that’s actually true.

    Gotta love English.

Honestly, it’s gotta be something you’d enjoy. Something you’ll look forward to accomplishing. I couldn’t really suggest anything for you. =)

Welcome! “A theme park”, hey? In Florida? =P

For studying tips, set yourself a goal. A book you want to read, or a game you want to play. =)

    So envy. Send us photos.

Honestly, you should be fine. Maybe see if you can get a pocket phrasebook for handy reference – if nothing else, it’ll let you focus on learning the bits you’ll need most as a tourist. I went to Japan for two weeks in 2010 before I started learning, with just the phrasebook, a few half-remembered words, and charades, and I managed just fine. Mind you, I might have saved some money if I’d understood the station announcement on the first night, or else had the courage to go ask someone directions…
