Thanks クリス for your detailed account, I’ll probably be using it much like you did. Hopefully I get results as favourable as yours.

September 1, 2012 at 6:26 am in reply to: RTK Remembering the Kanji: When is a good time to start? #35170I’m going to do RTK. I ordered the book on Amazon, I’ll start when it get’s here. Just being familiar with what’s worked for me in the past, I feel like having partial knowledge about the Kanji is going to be really useful when picking up new vocabulary, and the pronunciations, later on. It gives me some reference point in my head to attach the new knowledge.
Edit: Oh and I’m probably going to continue with TextFugu’s Kanji as well, even with the risk of confusing things between the two. The reason is, I want to make sure I know all the Kanji related vocabulary that come up in the TextFugu lessons.

If it’s just discipline and patience, I think I can manage that. But if there are negative aspects or side-effects to learning the Kanji with RTK, I might as well know about them beforehand.
I have to agree with Neil on this one. I don’t proceed until I’m reasonably comfortable with the vocab presented in the lessons (I’ve just finished Season 2).
I recently started to watch anime in Japanese with no subtitles. To be honest, I have no idea what’s being said most of the time. I’d be completely clueless if it wasn’t an anime I’ve watched in the past in English. But, when I recognize a word that I learned in one of the vocab lists, it’s the most motivating thing ever! It makes me want to sit down and learn more vocabulary so I can figure out what’s really going on (although I find I have a limit to how much vocab I can learn in one day… pass the limit, and I have trouble distinguishing the new words, they all sound the same).
So I really recommend learning the vocab. Even if you understand the grammar, your Japanese abilities are going to be severely crippled if you don’t have a critical mass of vocab under your belt.

Another example is the “nail” radical and the “street” kanji, that one’s had me confused a couple times.
I’m originally from Canada, near Toronto. I live in Karlsruhe, Germany right now though.
Welcome, fellow Canadian!
Thanks for the welcomes and tips!
