I actually do have a friend from Western Australia, but he generally just says he’s from Perth. On the other hand, I also have a friend or two from Washington state… could be either, though considering the English style, I’m gonna go with the state.
It might be a learned habit… It generally feels awkward to write/type GA, US(A), and I happen to come from a state that shares its name with a country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, so it would be doubly confusing if I wrote the name of the state out… and Georgia, US(A) also feels awkward.
