I just started season 4 and have reached that wonderful spot where you realize, even after feeling you’ve learned a lot, you also realize there’s a looooong way to go – and it’s not going to stay new and exciting always. Ah well, gotta work myself through it. Japanese is not the first foreign language I’ve learned, so it’s not a big surprise to me, but it still takes quite a big amount of willpower to get past it. :)
Anyway, so far what have bothered me the most are the ~5 pages of verbs/adjectives I had to learn before even being able to read on. I don’t mind spending time on building a vocabulary at all, but it’s a little bit tough when you can’t really read on a lot “in between” – I really appreciate diversity when learning.
I share your concern, Bethany. It’s a lot easier when you have Koichi to tell you what to do. ;)
Welcome Samson – hope you’re going to have fun here :)
Hello Dom and welcome. Hope you’ll have fun learning. :)
It’s not a big surprise Rosetta Stone didn’t help you a lot. A former RS employee made an AMAA (ask me almost anything) on reddit a while ago. The short version is that it’s built around learning Spanish and that doesn’t transition well to Japanese. If you (or anyone else) should be interested in the whole story it’s right here.
Hello to you good sir, and welcome. I wish you the best of luck with your studies; both CS and Japanese.
Hi Jonathan and welcome! Nice to see a fellow redditor. Though I guess most people use reddit these days.
Good luck with the studies. I’ve been at it for a couple of months now, and I still think TextFugu is super awesome. Just remember to keep going when it gets hard! :)
Nice update. I like the new-ish look.
Looking forward to a new forum as well ;)
Welcome and good luck :)
Welcome and good luck!
I hope you succeed then! I speak Danish as my first language and I have spent many years learning and improving my English. If you want a tip, what I have experienced as the only way to actually learn it properly: Use the language and use it a lot. Preferably every day. Oh, yea.. And patience. Lots and lots of patience. :)
I guess it’s kinda self-evident, but sadly a lot of people seem to forget it.Welcome and good luck with your learning! Do you speak any other languages already (other than English)?
Hey hey! Vi er jo også et lille land, men det er godt at se der er andre ;)
Japanese language and culture has interested me for the past 10-11 years.. or possibly more. My stepfather introduced me to manga and anime, and I guess that was pretty much what started it. I eventually grew to like the language and culture as well. I especially find all the contrasts to what I’m used to inspiring.
After some years I decided to give Japanese a go, but that is not very easy seeing as only very few high schools teach it, and unless you can afford a private teacher the only other way is to pretty much learn it yourself or study it in college/uni. I did find a 10 lesson course at some point and signed up for it; while it gave me some useful resources it also didn’t do much other than introduce me to way too many concepts and essentially it just ended up confusing me. :P
After that my interest kind of faded for a while until recently when からわ少女 was recommended to me by a friend (it does have a little bit of mature content, but it’s a actually a good story). I started digging around on the interwebs for some self study options and – well, here I am. :)
