Personally, I don’t think resolutions for the new year are stupid. They’ve worked for me for the past couple of years. They can be a powerful motivator, as long as you don’t set unrealistic goals that are doomed to fail from January 1st.

Seems like I have the same goals as ooh_a_robot for this year, with an extra one added in the mix:

    * Complete Remembering The Kanji by June. I actually started in late November, but that proved to be the most horrible time of year to have started, with family visiting me for the first time in California, and a week-long trip to Las Vegas to top off the year.
    * Getting my JPLT Level 4. Level 5 is not an option – it’s either Level 4 or bust :)
    * Since I’m visiting Japan for the first time around September / October, I want to be able to get around the country without speaking in English to communicate with native Japanese people. Or at least a very minimal use of spoken English.

I hope everyone achieves their goals and much more in 2012!

Joel, you’re right – the JLPT is given in July only in Japan. Doh! That’s kind of a bummer. Well, I guess I get more time to study until next December.

Best of luck to everyone who took / will take the JLPT! Hope everyone does well. I’m planning on starting with N5 next July, and see where I go from there.

I’m also a newbie here. One of the main reasons I paid up for Textfugu was for the promise of updates, which seemed to be plenty as stated on the Tour and Coming Soon pages, like someone mentioned in this thread. Now I see this thread that seems to say that updates are coming in much more slowly tha that (or not at all, I really don’t know what the deal is here since no one’s making it clear for us new guys). Since I’m starting from the beginning I’ll have lots of material to tide me over for a while. But I do admit that this perceived lack of updates is a concern for me now going forward. I know Textfugu isn’t the be-all-to-end-all of Japanese learning resources, but there should be a bit more clarity in what guys like me should expect. If the updates are coming much more slowly than what’s advertised, it’ll probably be best to adjust that.

I just finished having Yakitori for lunch! Lucky for me, there’s a small Teppanyaki place next to where I work.

One thing that has helped me to remember that I should study are sticky notes.

I have sticky notes in the halls of my apartment, in the bedroom, in the kitchen, next to my TV – wherever I spent the most time at my place. I write down whatever I’m currently studying or I want to review (in Kana or the very few Kanji that I know, never in Romaji) and that both reminds me and motivates me to actually do what’s on the note. As long as I keep the stickies around, it’s been surprisingly effective.

Welcome! Hopefully when you start studying again, a lot of it will come back to you. I always say that most people know much more than they expect :) Best of luck!

    Welcome!

I’m sorry to hear about your dog, too. It’s never an easy thing, especially when they’ve been part of your family seemingly forever.

I do have to say that studying 2-3 hours a day is great! Don’t think it’s very little time to study – it’s a whole lot more than I can afford! I can only afford to study about an hour a day on most nights. But as long as you’re consistent, and try to maximize whatever free time you have, it doesn’t matter if you study just a short while. It’s a marathon, so slow and steady will win the race :)

    Best of luck!

    Hi Lee, and welcome!

I’m a computer science major, and have spent the majority of my adult years immersed in computers and mathematics, similar to you, so I know the feeling of trying something totally new. I’ve been studying Japanese for only five months, but it’s been extremely refreshing to try out something not directly related to work! I hope you’re feeling the same way. Best of luck!
