I played the game when I was trying to get started learning Japanese a while back. I gave up on Japanese then maybe because I only played around with this game and some other online resources and didn’t feel like I was getting anywhere. I’m giving Japanese another go now with textfugu and since I already payed for slime forest I thought I’d use it as a supplement. One thing I noticed is slime forest introduces we and wi hiragana and katakana which aren’t standard characters. I’ve seen no other education resource that lists these as hiragana and katakana. So, that is kind of annoying. Also, the kanji have mnemonics that are built into the game that aren’t from textfugu that might be confusing, but you can skip over those in the game. So, in a sense I think it could be a good way of just learning the meanings of the kanji and building recognition. Other than that it is a quirky JRPG with many bad design choices that are kind of endearing. Otherwise, I haven’t noticed any big changes since the year or two ago I played the game. And no I never completed the game, but I might just do it at some point, so I’ll get back to you when that happens.
