    Okay, maybe my example was an example of active memory, but the spirit of my meaning was in the “recall while overwhelmed or flustered” part.

    For example, I recently learned the word 花 which means flower. In wanikani, I recognize it fairly well by looking at the flower radical on top and remembering “oh yeah, it’s flower!” But I was reading a text with a mix of english and Japanese terms and when the 花 kanji showed up, surrounded by complicated kanji that I haven’t learned yet, I failed to recognize it. I failed to recognize it because I didn’t look at it and say “now which one was this again?” because it seemed like one of the many kanji I didn’t know. On anki and wanikani, you can assume that all the kanji that pops up is kanji you’ve learned at one point.

    こんにちは Avitamin! If you ever feel your honeymoon period dwindle, you should make a post about it on the forums. We have all had our moments of doubt in the past but there’s always a way to rekindle the love for learning Japanese.

    Did you learn traditional Chinese characters or the simplified characters? Japanese kanji often match the traditional Chinese characters in meaning (and occasionally one of the readings as well), so knowing a tiny bit of Chinese may be confusing or it may be helpful. In any case, the two languages quickly diverge so I think after a while it won’t matter (for better or for worse).

    How hot is it in Japan in August? I’m looking at weather records online and the average temperature seems to be 29 Celsius, which is about as hot as Ohio in August. I’ve never really considered that blazing hot :o

    こんにちは、Dumax! はじめまして!

    For what it’s worth, I am part Lithuanian, though my ancestors moved to the US many generations ago. I’m still working out the family tree, so that’s as much as I know ^_^

    I think it depends on how strict you’d like to be with yourself. I personally would mark it as incorrect because I want the words to come to me easily. When I’m trying to speak with a native speaker and I’m all nervous and fumbling with my vocabulary, I doubt the words I knew through guessing/logic would come through for me. So I would click “incorrect” to make them come back earlier in Anki so I could get more study time with them.

    Hello Pug, nice to meet you! I’ve just recently decided that I will also visit Japan one day. Now I’m trying to work out the logistics of traveling across the world >_<

    Anyway, don’t be a stranger! Do come back and visit the forums from time to time c:

    Hi Brian, nice to meet you! I didn’t realize that Japan was hosting the 2020 Olympics :o that’s super cool! Be sure to study Japanese culture as well as the language- often a part of the localization job is to translate Japanese cultural references to ones that the West will understand. Besides, Japanese culture is interesting and totally worth studying ^_^

    Good luck with your studies, and I hope to see you around!

    Hm maybe I’ll give Unity and C# a try, then! I already know Javascript fairly well, so I have a headstart on that ^_^

    I am 21 and still a student, but I’m currently taking a semester off for an internship at a company called CoverMyMeds. We offer services related to the American healthcare system (which is probably nonsensical to other countries), and a lot of our websites/services are written in ruby on the backend. The job is actually a lot more exciting than it sounds c;

    I’ve been trying to study Japanese for years now. But it wasn’t until a few months ago that I buckled down and really studied with any consistency. I’m about to start season 5 and also use WaniKani for vocab (which I swear by).

    I’d have to say my favorite language is Ruby, which coincidentally is the invention of a Japanese programmer. Sadly, Ruby isn’t designed for game development. I’ve used C, C++ and Java, but have the same problem with all of them- the available game libraries are poorly documented and difficult to use. I’ve been meaning to check out Unity, which has a strong community and is supposedly well-maintained, but I don’t know C# yet :\

    Hi Jack! I also use my Japanese studies as a break from all of the heavy thinking that programming requires. What’s your favorite language/framework for developing video games?
