    What kind of sentences can be expected to be found in the book? :)
    Currently going through a sentence deck, buuuut I need some manga or other Japanese literature soon :D

    @Mark
    The things is that Denmark is so small that we can’t have everything translated in to Danish, so most people will know at least a little English. Of course the older part of the population aren’t fluent at all, but the younger generations are generally pretty good at English.
    So to answer your question, fluency is not common and will mostly be attained by businessmen and the younger generation. Most Danes do however understand and speak English just fine – though not at a level that I would consider fluent.
    Also I don’t know if it is right to refer to myself as fluent, I don’t know when you are eligible for that title…

    Hmmm…
    I think this must be something completely personal then, because no matter how many cake examples that will be brought up, I will still concentrate better with music. It allows for complete immersion in what you are doing because you can’t hear anything(assuming you have an isolating headset).
    I do only listen to vocal-less music, so that might also be why I am able to concentrate to it. Vocals are a thing of the past ^^

    Actually this is a pretty interesting topic :) I must admit I thought some people would feel the same as me :P

    There is no science with music. The key is to get used to it. No matter what I do, be it reading, writing, exams etc.. I always listen to music of 125-180BPM. I concentrate better, so I seriously think “special music” for concentration is a load of BS.
    I know it has been proven that music with BPM around 60(if I remember correctly) can help you concentrate, but I find 3 times that BPM to reinforce my concentration just as much. Get used to listening to music while doing everything and it will help you a great deal.

    With all that being said, my advice is to just get used to listening to music. It takes a while before very loud music at around 70-80db don’t mess your concentration the slightest – but damn it is helpful once you can do it. As long as you have a good headset you can concentrate everywhere :D

    I was not aware of that ^^
    Add “you can” and it should make for a better translation if I understood it correctly at least.

    Thanks for pointing out Elenkis :)

    @Pencil
    痛かったら悲鳴をあげていいからね?
    I would translate to:
    If it is painful, scream loud (because…)

    Such expressions are often translated in to something which is not in the sentence itself, but simply is implied, or understood from the context. Only other I can come up with now is this one: 石の上にも三年 meaning perseverance prevails, but translated over to “even the coldest rock will get warm if sat on for three years”. As you can see it is the same here. Some words are included in the translation which are not even in the sentence, but they that is just how it is with such expressions.
    It is either implied or taken from context.

    It is starting to make sense, I have also just as Joel, only heard mentioning of this as kind of a side thing, so most of this was new to me.
    I am still puzzled over why 子猫 was kept kanji though, but thanks for clarifying :D

    in reply to: The Study Thread #27433

    @Mister Yeah, I can see it pay off well in the long run :D But I could have learned maybe 600 words in 2 months, which is also a lot. But those 600 words are now way easier to learn thanks to knowing the kanji :)

    I went ahead and signed up for JLPT4 this summer. Now for hoping I can get good enough in time :D Also Mark, I will see you there I guess!
    A question to those who have done it before, how does the listening part work. Do you only get to listen once, or can you listen to it multiple times? :/

    Valid point, but why is 子猫 in kanji and not katakana then? :S

    in reply to: Where is everyone from? #27416

    @Mark, We speak Danish

    @Mark W: Shouldn’t that be で or が instead of だ? Just to make it a “run-on” sentence.
    You might be the better judge of that. Choosing だ was actually is a deliberate choice, so I would be happy to get corrected if something else sounds better :)

    Exactly. You asked something so simple that even someone who has never studied Japanese could figure it out. I think that if you can figure it out yourself, then you shouldn’t ask.

    Here, I will use my expert knowledge of ctrl+c → ctrl+v to solve your problem:
    http://jisho.org/words?jap=%E3%83%A1%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC&eng=&dict=edict&romaji=on
    It takes less time for me than typing it out in hiragana or romaji for you.
