So that means there are some radicals that are kind of like cousins of the official radical? And when you want to find a kanji you have to factor in the cousin effect?
Elenkis – Oh that does take a load off of my mind. Thanks!
Joel – Personally I found I could read hiragana faster after I learned to write it. I can see why memorizing the stroke order for every radical, and kanji isn’t the best use of time early on, but I can see doing it at some point to help with reading.
クリス – I didn’t know I could do that thanks!
Kanjiman8 – I’ll have to try, and see if that can be done with Ankidroid. I haven’t noticed any font options, but I didn’t think to look for them either.
Joel – I see what you’re saying. I guess I was hopeful there would be a trick that wasn’t obvious, but if it’s about context, then it sounds like it will just come with experience.
Thanks all!
Why do you say it doesn’t matter if they look the same? Won’t that make it hard to learn the kanji that use them? Or at least to look up the kanji that use them?
In the image they look different enough for me to tell the difference. Unfortunately, on the Droid even that subtle difference is gone. It’s like telling the difference between “A” and “A”.
Sorry if I’m being dense on a key point.
Ah, thanks, I’ve read through that posting now. I at least understand what is wrong, but I’m still not sure how I should handle that case.
I’ve noticed there are several radicals that look similar, based on the radicals on jisho.org, and I’ve been wondering how best to handle those cases.
For example:
口 and 囗
look the same on my monitor right now, and only slightly different on jisho.org. According to jisho one is mouth, and the other is box.
Any insight you may have on working with these would be greatly appreciated.
W’oh I had no idea I was seeing these characters so incorrectly on Anki Windows and on AnkiDroid. In Anki Windows there is a small difference, but with the AnkiDroid there was none. I’ll send Windows screen shots to show the subtle cues I was going off of.
As for the AnkiDroid there is literally no difference between the two.

I’ve never used that service before, so if the image doesn’t appear please let me know.
Thanks,

Great thanks! I’ll check all of those out.
I do have AnkiDroid, and it’s my primary source for using Anki. I use it on the elevator, walking down the hall, etc. It’s not perfect, but it does a good job.
I will give one warning to anyone who is looking to use it. The radicals fins and volcano look the same, and that messes me up pretty bad. Also, it doesn’t seem to have audio.
Other than that it’s a great tool.
That’s awesome news! I peeked ahead, and I’m almost there, however, I still would love to have additional resources to help me practice numbers if anyone has any suggestions.
I’ve found a few Droid apps, but the ones I’ve been using have been less than accurate, or extremely limited.
Wow JA Sensei is a great find! I was looking for a good numbers app, and this also seems to do so much more. Thanks for sharing it!
Ah gotcha! Thanks. That makes sense as to why that works that way.
Thanks for the clarification! It’s difficult to know when my assumptions are correct or not when it comes to a new language.
For those of us with email aliases is there a way to use gravatar with different email address on this forum? Or is there a way to setup an avatar directly?
Knowing development related words would definitely be helpful for me professionally as I’m trying to get to a point where I can telecommute from Japan.
February 8, 2012 at 10:39 am in reply to: Season 1 – Passion Video Games: Don't rule them out #26445Ultimately I ended up going with terms that are related to Mountain Biking. It’s a hobby of mine that I really enjoy. I’m not passionate about it like I am with gaming, but I was able to find about 12-14 nouns and verbs that aren’t loaned words related to it. Also, I sometimes like to come up with sentences in Japanese while riding, so having words related to riding would be helpful.
I see what you guys are saying thanks for the reality check!
I guess it’s tricky to know when I’m being too gun ho about something or not. Since I’m not in a class room, I guess, I’m leaning on the side of caution.
