Thanks guys. That does make me feel a bit more safe about how to use them!
@jkl – That’s a great point. I guess I unconsciously picked up on that. I can practice writing without powering up my computer in the morning. If have 15 free minutes before work, I spend that writing, instead of losing 5 minutes getting into Anki. In the evening, if I get sick of flash cards, I can take a quick break, and the last few days the “break” was practicing writing, and I felt refreshed after that.
I’ve also found I can only learn so many new vocab words before I start to stumble, and learn fewer vocab words because I’m trying to get familiar with too many new ones at one time. If I mix in writing practice it doesn’t seem to impact my ability to learn vocab words, but piling on more vocab would make it trickier.
Also, thanks for the feedback on learning the stroke order rules. That makes sense. I won’t bother trying to memorize them for now based on your thoughts, and I’ll see how it goes.

My plan is to do the top 100 most used kanji. I guess it will help you guess better for the ones you don’t know. You might look like a gaijin in a pinch, but people or software will probably know what you mean.
At the same time one rule of language learning I keep hearing over and over is everyone learns it differently, so find what works for you. I’ve already seen a gain. Yggbert doesn’t think he will, so that’s an easy choice for him. If you’re uncertain I’d conduct a small trail period, and see what you think.
That makes sense. Although, I must confess it seems like an awful lot to learn all at once. Maybe it’s not so bad. I’m trying to do 5 a day, we’ll see if that’s a realistic pace, and so far it’s not that bad.
Also, when I learned to write hiragana I found my reading speed and accuracy went up notably, so there is something to be said for that advantage as well.
Yggbert:
Stroke order is one of those things I’ll do to improve my handwriting when it will actually matter, which is probably not going to be until you are in Japan. You can still have perfectly respectable handwriting without knowing the stroke order too.
Focus on grammar and vocab, more important to me for sure.@Yggbert – That was my initial position as well. What I found was when I’m trying to read I need to look up a kanji. I can sometimes quickly find the kanji using radicals. Other times I can waste an hour, and still not find it. Now, even with my incredibly limited writing experience I can find kanji more quickly by guessing the stroke order. It hasn’t always worked out for me, but I expect that’s where more experience will come into play. Still, it saves me time, and it is something I need to do eventually anyway, so I might as well integrate it into my studies.
I can’t take credit for this discovery though. It was MissingNo15 that pointed it out to me.
That makes sense.
It also sounds like the exceptions are pretty rare which is a nice change of pace. ;0
Hm, interesting. I can’t help but notice the two don’t match up exactly. They’re close in a lot of ways. I suspect the best answer is to learn a fair number of kanji and these rules will become second nature?
Wow Missing you’re like a freakin’ idol prophet.
I can’t help finding the idea of “All” being supplemental kind of amusing. ;)
I’d say oxymoronic, but that comes off a bit harsh.

Using a mountain bike for suburban areas lol. Theres a bike trail (which is separate from the roads and highways to a certain point) that leads up to my high school where I can play tennis and if I’m not in a hurry, it’ll take me around 30 minutes. Probably not mountain biking though lol so I guess streetInteresting. Based on your experience how much concentration does it require to make it worth your while? That is to say I’ll be riding on rocks, roots, stair steps, near shear drops, etc. If it’s a minor focus I think I’d be fine. If it’s anything more than it’s probably not a good plan. ;)

I wouldn’t know anything about it really, but I listen to the recorded Japanese radio or podcasts when I go out bikingStreet or mountain biking? I mountain bike, and I’ve debated listening to japanese audio while riding, but I’m nervous it’ll distract me from being safe.
@kanjiman8 – W’oh did you just level up to some new ultimate form?
If rooted there are ways to change the system font to a Japanese one, but in my experience they then tend to look terrible for English text.
Do you know how to do this if the Droid is already rooted? Is it an app? What about it looks bad?
Also, do you know how to enanble and quickly switch to a Japanese keyboard on the droid?
Fortunately, I have a link for you all which has material (with script included) that is representative of legit Japanese conversation.
