I’ve been using the iOS app for a few months now, and I’m pretty happy with it. The old Anki 1.2 app was okay, but it had a tendency to be a little clunky at times. Still, it meant that 6AM reviews were easy. The new app, though? It’s pretty awesome. The interface is much smoother, syncing works *much* better (though that’s true for the desktop version too), and you can edit cards in the app now, which is very convenient at times. Also, Anki 2 also has fancy graphs, and everyone loves fancy graphs.

You’re probably thinking of Forvo: http://www.forvo.com/
It only lets you make very short recordings, though.

You could just beg people to read things on Lang-8 and ask them use something like Audioboo, too.

Here’s how I would think of it. The difference comes in what part of the sentence is in past tense. Anyone with more experience, please feel free to correct me.

箱(はこ)のはずだった。– This is like “(I) expected it is a box.” (Probably better as “It was expected to be a box.” Past tense is attached to はず.)

箱(はこ)だったはずです。– This is like “(I) expect it was a box.” (You’re attaching the past tense to 箱.)

Like I said, please correct me if this is wrong, but that’s how I’ve thought of it. The difference between the two is when the expectation or supposition happened. It’s a fairly subtle distinction.

With hiragana, I think learning them “in order” makes it easier to recognize the patterns that some things follow. The hiragana charts early in TextFugu will help you out there, because later you’ll need to know what group a kana belongs to for some conjugations, like knowing that the あ-sound in the same column as む is ま.

There’s also something strangely pleasing about saying them in order, e.g. ま、み、む、め、も. (But maybe that’s just me.)

Regardless of what’s available for this forum script, google site search is a decent alternative. Try

    [[query]] site:textfugu.com

in Google and you should see some decent results. Of course it’s not as specific or current as a script that searches textfugu’s database directly, but it’s not a bad alternative. Try [[query]] forum site:textfugu.com in Google. It seems to be decent at finding things in the forum, though I might be a bad person to test it—I’m not looking for anything in the forum right now.

    …and, while you’re at it [[query]] site:textfugu.com/bb is worth a try too…

Thanks a lot! I’m proud of the stuff I have on that page—there are plenty that don’t turn out as nice thanks to choices beyond my control.

Sure do, hashi. I need to make something nicer, but this simple list of stuff I recently built works well for now: http://flyingpiscivore.com/web-portfolio/

I might scrap the whole thing to make room for something that can use jquery quicksand. Eventually.

I send my thanks to both of you. I thought about my first post here and worry that I might have seemed a little condescending. Please believe me when I say that I didn’t intend to.

    Anyway, thanks again!
