I’ve done RTK, but if I were to go about it again, I’d rather choose a method that teaches you the kanji together with their readings. Sure, RTK works, but there’s one problem with it: it’s boring as heck. Or at least for me it was. And you aren’t enjoying the process of learning, then you might as well stop. I admit, I screwed up a bit and stopped reviewing for like 3 weeks when I was near the end of the book and so I don’t really remember the meanings of the kanji now (I tried to keep reviewing after having finished the book, but ultimately gave up, because I hated doing the reviews so much).
But I admit, RTK wasn’t a complete waste of time. It forever changed the way I look at kanji. They’re no longer a jumbled mess, because through the book I’ve been trained to recognize the primitve elements (radicals) they’re made up of so it’s much easier to recognize them when reading now. But I still far prefer the method of learning kanji together with vocab. It’s just much more fun.
But I’d say give RTK a try and if you feel it’s working for you, then by all means go for it. It doesn’t teacher you any Japanese, but it builds a strong foundation for learning the language if you stick with it. But if you find yourself struggling through the book, I’d look for another method. It’s important to have fun – Japanese shouldn’t be a chore c:
I guess I’d recommend Cave Story if you like retro Metroidvania sidescrollers. It’s fun, it’s got a pretty nice story and I don’t think the language in it is very complicated, but I can’t say for sure as I’ve only played it in English (though I’m gonna try playing it in Japanse once I finish it in English).
Oh, and it’s free. You can get it here, for example :p http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php

December 18, 2011 at 12:38 pm in reply to: The "I found some Japanese I don't understand" thread. #22652So I found this flash animation about an urban legend about some killer popup called “red room”. It’s probably way beyond my (very basic) level, but hey, who cares. I’ve been trying to make sense of the text that appears in this flash anyway.
So here’s this sentence: ホームページを開いた瞬間、本来のブラウザ似外に表示される小さな広告。 Now, while I can’t translate this exactly (obviously), I can kinda get what this means… save for one little thing. 似外 – no idea what’s this word, couldn’t find it in a dictionary, when I put it in google images, I got a lot of pictures of heads and skulls, a lot of them deformed. So now I’m curious…
That much I know, I’ve done RtK :p
Skyrim is way too addicting, I swear. It’s like you start playing at 1 and then after just a few minutes it’s suddenly 6 >_>
Question: do you have any advice for remembering the words for “days of the months/number of days”? (such as 一日、八日、二十日) I normally remember problematic words after reviewing them enough, but those keep giving me trouble and it’s been some time since I first saw them in Anki… bleh.
@Yggbert: a good suggestion, but I think it’s the HDD itself that’s busted, or at least I keep getting disk read errors. I keep backups of most of my files on an external HDD, so that’s not a problem. And CHKDSK fixed my Anki, which I’m glad about.
Well, I’m resuming my reviews today. I think it’ll take about 3 hours to get through all reviews xD
^I shall remember that. But I don’t get why the backupped decks aren’t working. Or completely new ones I download, for that matter.
Looks like I’m screwed anyway, because none of my Anki decks will open. Yep, I keep backups on another harddrive, tried reinstalling Anki, even fixing the files with a program from the Anki website – nope.
And that’s why I wanted a phone with Android – so I could review on there in case my computer gets busted >_>

But I guess I’d be happier if I could sing.
Interestingly, after reading your post, Missing, I started to have my doubts whether it’s really a right decision xD
I know I’m not gonna quit completely, it was never a question of whether I’m going to learn Japanese, only when.
Worst thing is, I didn’t do any Anki reviews the past week, not because of my decision, but because my computer has been acting up, and now I got like 500 reviews to do… It’s a bit discouraging. And my computer still isn’t fully fixed. Sigh. I feel like I’m wasting time.
Oh, also – I’m a girl. Just lettin’ you know :p

Napping generally makes me feel even worse. Can try sleeping early, though I have horrendous problems with sleeping in general – I’m one of these people who’d be happy to go to sleep at 3-4 AM and get up past noon. Still, it’s more than just being tired from not sleeping enough/overwork. I’m exhausted in a way sleeping more won’t fix. I’m sick of learning/studying anything in general. Honestly, it’s hard to be concerned with anything if all you wanna do is curl into a ball and have everyone leave you alone. So the only way to get through will be doing the bare minimum others expect me to do.
I doubt I’d be able to drop Japanese completely, though, I’d at the very least keep reviewing what I have learned so far. I’ve been doing it for so long it’d feel weird to stop now.
Guys, guys, it’s not that I don’t have enough time to spend on learning the language, but between school and homework I’m too tired to focus on it.
Spending half of your current life on something you absolutely loathe is very mentally taxing.
@Mark – it should be “its downsides”, since “it’s downsides” would be “it is downsides”. Doesn’t make sense, right? ;)
Sorry for being a grammar nazi, it’s just one common mistake that bugs me a lot, because almost everyone I see keeps getting it wrong :<
