I started off doing 20 words per day, now I’m down to 15, because this number feels less intimidating XD
I just finished step 2 of Core2k which means, that I should know around 400 Japanese words by know.
… It doesn’t really feel like it. But I know I’m making progress. It’s just slow as heck.
Also, finally resumed my TextFugu study. Love how Koichi explained the verb groups in casual verbs chapter – I read about verbs before and it seemed very complicated… Koichi made it look like the easiest thing in the world!
The more words I learn through Core2k, the more I feel like I’m never going to learn this language… at least when it comes to reading. Haha, shouldn’t it be the other way around? xD
I’m gonna stick to it, because I still believe it’ll get better once I have a bigger vocabulary – kanji are still a major pain, though, even having finished RTK. While I recognize the words I know no problem in the Core sentences, in the “wild”? Not so much. Not like I’m going to give up, but it’s a bit discouraging…
@Armando – my native language is Polish. I’ve been learning English as a school subject for about 9 or 10 years now, it’s hard to tell when exactly I started. But the fact English is about everywhere nowadays made learning it a lot easier. But believe me, my English isn’t really excellent. On the internet I can mark up what I don’t know with chatspeak and emotes, hard to do in an actual conversation :p Not to mention if you start talking about a subject I’m not familiar with, I’ll quickly find myself at a complete loss of words. And I keep messing up past tenses. But I tell myself that as long as people understand me, it’s fine.
I do have the habit of thinking in English most of the time, writing stuff in English whenever it doesn’t have to be in my native language, and weirdest of all, talking to myself in English – to the point I can often thing of phrases in English faster than ones in Polish. It’s a bit scary, to be honest xD

I feel that the biggest difference is that, while most (not saying all) cartoons here are aimed primarly at children, and even though a lot of them are also going to be enjoyable for teenagers/adults, they’re still made for kids. There’s a lot of anime aimed specifically at mature viewer though – it causes confusion, because in the west we’re used to thinking that cartoons = for kids. It’s similar with comics and manga too, I think.
I will forever lol at my classmate who came up to me when I was reading Death Note during recess and asked: “aren’t you a bit too old for reading stuff like this?”
^I know that article, but thanks for reminding me it exists :p I’m hardly an intermediate learner, but I suppose that applies to me just as well. I should just bookmark it and read it whenever I feel like stopping.
@Mark: I don’t feel that I know enough to make an entry beyond a few disjointed sentences… I’m not going to wait until God knows when, but just until I know more vocab, and since I’m learning new words every day, that should come soon.
I wish I could remember more from the time when I could be considered a beginner/intermediate learner in English. It would’ve helped greatly. Except, I didn’t learn English through any conscious effort, just classes at school and the internet. Never had to study grammar or vocabulary lists. But it also took a very long time to learn this way :p
Honestly, I don’t think Japanese is very complex compared to English. Its grammar is very different, yes. The writing is difficult as heck. But as far as grammar goes, it appears to be way more organized than English, with its… how many tenses was that again… 14? 16? I MIGHT change my mind once I get into the more advanced stuff, but that’s only because I already know English fairly well.
It took me about 9 years to get to this level of English I’m at now, and I still wouldn’t consider myself fully fluent. Still, I would be delirious if I could speak Japanese as well as I can English right now. Those 9 years consisted mostly of classes at school, so with spending some time studying Japanese every day I assume it’ll take a bit less. I think 2 years of studying 1-2 hours every day (well, ALMOST every day, it’s never gonna be every single day) is a realistic goal if we talk about being able to hold a casual conversation, but it’s impossible to set a deadline for complete fluency, I agree :p
Well, Khatzumoto claims to have learned Japanese to fluency in 18 months, but that’s Khatzumoto. Nobody is quite as hardcore as him xD
2 years is perhaps a bit too far-fetched, because I work slowly, but I’d like to be able to at least read and understand Japanese fairly well by then. Speaking and writing will take longer, for sure.
I was thinking about going to university to study Japanese phiLOLogy, and if I got fairly good at Japanese by then, it would dramatically decrease my work load (plus I’d impress my lecturers, haha), and I would be able to rely on it to better my Japanese, while also learning about the culture and about how to translate things, since I wanna be a translator…
Well, that’s the plan! Plans may change :p

Well, there are a few lessons about particles spread out thorough the entire TextFugu: は particle in S2, CH6, が in S3, CH3, を and に are learned alongside verbs, then と and で in S6, chapters 1 and 3 respectively. So yeah, it’s kinda all over the place (it would be too much if we had to learn it all at once, wouldn’t it :p)
I’m not sure if there’s a bit overview on particles anywhere, I’m only in S4 myself.
I feel that I’ve reached the dreaded “dip” now, honestly. Or rather, I suck and I know it :p While I know I’ve made progress, it feels like I haven’t done anything at all. I also get this nagging feeling that I’m doing something wrong I always get when learning something new. But I guess if I keep my daily routine, I’ll HAVE to get better eventually. 15/20 new words a day + one Fugu lesson if I can manage it. Paying more attention to the vocab for now. Grammar is important, but useless if I don’t have the vocab to use it with, ain’t it right?
That’s because until not too long ago we only had 3 seasons, but Koichi broke them down into smaller chunks. So old S1 = seasons 1 and 2 now and so on.

It also depends on where you live. Plane tickets to Japan are really, really expensive here, so getting one for free would save quite a bit of money for me. That being said, I’m not going to participate in this, even if it does seem tempting xD
