Yay, I just finished step 1 of Core2k. But heck, memorizing the vocab is hard. Most of the time I can tell what the word means from looking at the kanji, but now how to read. It’s annoying. I wonder if it’ll get easier once I learn more words D:
As for German, I really don’t know why people find it angry sounding. Everyone around me seems to think so – but I actually like German very much (even if I hate my teacher) and I don’t think it sounds angry at all :p Funnily, my parents said they didn’t like Japanese because it “sounds like German” and because “it’s like they’re shouting all the time”.
*ahem* But yes, hello and welcome to TextFugu :)
Hiragana and katakana both took about a week to learn for me. Probably a lifetime to master though, along with kanji :)
I’m currently at chapter 5, season 4 and it took me about 1.5 month to get this far, now progressing a bit slower because of school. I’m not very far along when it comes to learning Japanese yet, but consistency is the key, they tell me. Also studying with the Core 2k flashcards, at the 155th, and with 15-20 words a day it took me a week to get here. Memorizing the words ain’t easy though.
Hopefully someone more experienced will be able to share more :p
Indeed: when I did RtK, there were a few kanji that just wouldn’t stay in my memory so I kept getting pissed off and failed them over and over again – but now those are the ones I remember best.
So keep at it! :p
I’d say that’s an awesome idea and would definitely love to be able to use something like this to learn Japanese – although it can be hard to make it both entertaining and educational. Well, if all goes according to my plan then 4 years from now I’ll be pretty decent at Japanese and 2nd year into my Japanese philology studies. But I am also planning to learn how to create games, though not in Java… well, we’ll see.
Keep at it :D
So I decided to get rid of the Anki deck I’ve using all thorough RtK (kanji -> keyword). It was good, of course, but I started to feel that it’s only teaching me how to write kanji while I’m now focusing my attention on learning how to READ kanji (and it sure did teach me to write kanji – no Japanese character will be a bunch of squiggles to me again), plus I got way too many cards overdue and doing the reviews was very boring. Not sure if it’s a good idea, but eh, whatever.
I’m now going through a new RtK deck, kanji -> keyword this time, and following Elenkis’ advice, I started Core 2k – found it very enjoyable, although I kept getting annoyed at the fact I could remember what some kanji mean but now how to read them ^-^@Elenkis: thanks for good advice – the only thing I’m wondering about, though, is where I should get the vocab to study from. I’m not even nearly good enough to use native media yet, I fear. I’m sure there are a lot of resources on the internet, but I’m not sure which are good and which are crap, to put it simply.
It turns out I’m really godawful at memorizing the verbs. Or just Japanese words in general, besides those I picked up from watching anime :D
Well, I kind of expected that, Japanese vocab is so different from any European language after all. I’m sure I’ll eventually get better…
Reading Tae Kim’s guide is making me feel nervous about how much I still don’t know yet. Everything but the most basic points seems pretty complicated… I forgot what’s it like to be learning grammar already, been a good 4 or 5 years since I had to that for English. Hah.I’m not close to finishing TextFugu anytime soon, but stince I like to plan, what would you guys recommend doing after that, or even now, besides Fugu? I’ve only done RtK so far. The world of Japanese is huge and I’m not sure which direction to take =D
Definitely not TL;DR, you should’ve seen mine :p
Anyhow, welcome to Fugu! Hope you have a good time and stuff~The only complaint I have is about the new coloration. This gray-ish color = a bit sad and disheartening :<
I feel kinda mad at myself for not having studied anything for the past few days and neglecting to do my Anki reviews… granted it’s because my gums got infected, half my face is swollen (I look like a hamster) and I’m in almost constant pain, still. I can’t bring myself to do anything that requires me to put my brain to work. Well. Except playing Portal for like 15 minutes a day, that is.
And so I have finished Season 1. I feel proud of myself and so looking forward to learn more.
I feel rather good about myself when I realize that a week ago I wasn’t able to recognize most hiragana characters, now I can write them all out from memory. The weird thing is that I’m better at writing them than reading.
I’m also almost done with Season 1. It was mostly stuff I already knew or, as Koichi keeps saying, “knew but didn’t know about it”. But still, I learned something new, some vocab (vocab is always good), and noticed that I’ve never been so happy to learn something before as I am now, learning Japnese. Perhaps I will feel less sure about it when it comes to harder stuff, but I’ll enjoy this while it lasts :p
So looking forward to starting Season 2.
To be honest, TextFugu confuses me a little. Where are the dull, repetitive exercises and stories I don’t give two damns about? 8D
But seriously, it might be simple stuff so far, but the lessons are so much fun to read it’s hard to pull myself away from it.
Heeey, looks like you joined Fugu the same day as me ;3
Hopefully in a bit the two of us will be able to look back at this day and notice how far along we’ve gotten.
As for living in Japan, don’t give up that dream just yet. It might seem impossible now, and it might very well be, but in a few months or years, who knows what might happen? If you really want something, don’t give up, and someday you might be able to realize this dream. At least that’s what I believe.
And I call myself a realist? :p
