Aww what?! Kanji is awesome! Much easier than trying to cram abstract vocab in hiragana! At least a Kanji will instantly allow me remember the word by quick glance. If not I have to trawl through a tonne of similar sounding words in my head and hope I actually got it right first guess.
Compunds still giving me a bit of trouble, but I’m just guessing it will come together soon! Although, neither RTK or Kanjidamage are good for that anyway..

Meh, I don’t beggrudge paying for Anki.. I’ve used it long enough for free, might as well give something in return.. The fact i’ve been using it on my phone for about a month now, i’ve already got my money out of it.
Read the Kanji.. Hmm, not sure about it.. I did have a look around and found it similar to iKnow.. I liked iKnow when I was using it, but was only in the stages of learning Hiragana back… I say back then.. It was January.. The Kanji section just scared me ha!
iKnow also had a free app (with your monthly subscription).

I might give Read the Kanji a go when I’ve made my way through RTK – I’m thinking i may even scrap RTK for Textfugu radicals and just make up my own stories.. Heisig’s references just seem kind of boring to me.. (<- total derailment).

I’ve never really had much luck with these weird one off Kanji Learning or Japanese learning apps / websites. They’ve always just ended up being a bit of a waste of money for me.
The most effective method I have found for fully utilising my iPhone and my study is Evernote and Anki – Evernote is excellent as I just jam all my vocab pdf’s on it and a tonne of other useful stuff and just review as and when i get a few minutes (I have a pro account so I can use it offline if i happen to be out of 3g range). Anki for iPhone is also a good investment (although it’s £17) – it’s one of those things that, when it becomes portable, it’s super effective.. I can just grab, 5 mins at work and bang through my kanji reviews, an hour later, take another 5 mins and do another load of reviews.. Instead of just going “Right for the next 30 mins i will do anki” i just fit it in around my day, gives me loads more time to watch/review other aspects of Japanese learning.

I hope this helps, the above two are really the only app’s you should ever need.. don’t buy in to the sales pitch of “You can learn Japanese in 3 months with this app!” as it’s bullshit – I haven’t seen anything be more efficient than the ways given in textfugu..

@gigatron – $4000 is pretty good mate.. How long are you planning on being in country for?
Airbnb is actually incredible.. Combine that with couch surfing and that 4K will last you a heck of a long time..
Covering food with just Ramen and Rice.. You’ll probably earn more in interest ha!

Is anyone planning on getting the Work Travel Visa for a year? Any experience with this?

This is the plan for 2013 (in time for the cherry blossom!) – Need to finish off my contract at work.. mover home, earn a shit load of money (not paying rent) – Then boom.. Trans-Siberian train, over and on the ferry to Japan for a year or working on organic farms and couch surfing.

My plan is not to find a tonne of work out there (Although working for the butler cafe is well appealing). More just to work for free in some places in exchange for accommodation (which there are a few resources out there for, do some WWOOF.. I dunno, just make it up as I go along.

My calculations give me about a year or so before travel, language being the most important focus. I guess this gives me enough time to get my conversational up to a level where I won’t starve to death and I can thank people for their kindness (also throw out dodgy pick up lines).

I also want blog posts MOAR BLOG POSTS! Photo’s inspire me.. plus learning from others is the best way! ^_^

    SO ANYWAY!

My Intention was not to start a debate.. and I was hoping to let this thread die a death considering it’s been derailed to point where they’ve now finished the search for survivors and are just scraping off the body parts..

The e-book is actually pretty good! Well worth the $10 I paid for it (which is about £6!) I’ve just actually been reading a few chapters a night, some of the info is included already in TextFugu but goes into way more detail and actually lays down a plan.
Really beneficial for a self learner who feels a bit stuck (like I did before I joined textfugu).
So.. Yeh, well worth the money.. Shouldn’t be free to textfugu members (maybe discounted), would recommend it for anyone who needs some help and guidance on where to go with their studies.

@thisiskyle you make a very good point, I remember Kanji meanings and reading much easier than I do the vocab word alone in Hiragana. And actually enjoy it which is always a bonus. I think RTK is the way to go for this, I love textfugu Kanji, there just isn’t enough to satisfy me at the moment.

@クリス Exactly, the words I have remembered I have managed to make associations for, or even just remembered outright for some reason. ききます is my favorite! ^-^ I’ve been attempting it with the rest of the Vocab, but I guess I’ve just run out of ideas. I’m actually going to take a break for a day or so from drilling it hard to focus on something else. Think up some associations and just relax trying to learn it.

    Cheers for you help guys!

Hmm I agree completly with Andrew. Even though it’s not finished, and no I havn’t even finished it yet.. Koichi needs to eat, needs to pay rent.. Needs to have a source of income.. Even though we have probably all paid for lifetime membership.. It’s worked out a hell of a lot cheaper for us and way more beneficial than any other Japanese resource out there (well for me anyway).. Yes you should get what you pay for, however the down time for textfugu lessons means you have time to focus on other areas of your learning, reinforce what you’ve already learned and just generally diversify..
You will all probably say I’m talking out my arse..
But I respect Koichi and Hashi for the monumental amount of effort they put into everything they do.. And I don’t begrudge sending them some money when I get something useful in return. Better them than Rosetta Stone who just sell you something useless for twice the price..

ANYWAY! Just had a quick read, and Day 1: Make a tradition.. This is already a habit of mine, however I haven’t been applying it to the best of my ability. Extra trees here we come! ^-^

@マーク・ウェーバー + Mister – Interesting.. I will probably end up getting on this in the next month or so. I quite enjoy the Radical/Primitive section of textfugu then being able to actually apply that to Kanji.

On a separate subject, I wanted to get everyone’s opinion on Vocab. Something I find a bit strange is.. That if you place 15 English (or at least Latin based) words in front of my on flash cards.. Show me the meanings and then ask me to recall them when you flash me the card, no problem.. I could and have easily learned 10-15 new English words a day..
However, I’m trying to lay down 3-7 Verb Vocab ‘Doing Something’ – although I’m struggling and can’t seem to figure out why. I’ve maybe got 10 down to perfect from about a week worth of study..
This hasn’t happened yet, I make some vivid associations in my head, drill the words in Anki.. I’ve changed my outlook and learning procedure at least once each..

I know eventually over time it will just sink in, however I just wanted to know if anyone else has had issues with this section or has any good tips?

I’m at the stage now where I’m just going to move on and add some adjectives into the mix.. I’ll get bored if I just end up focusing on this one thing..

Yeh occasionally both textfugu and tofugu seem to be down for a few hours at a time, maybe a couple of times a week.

I’ll post up next time it happens.

@マーク・ウェーバー – just from your post on the previous page about RTK – did you find this helped? The issue with RTK I have is that there is no reading.. then having to find that Kanji to find the reading is a bit of a pain in the arse.

Let me know your overall experience and just your general use.. I’ve been reluctant in starting it until I have finished textfugu Kanji.
