I totally missed these last two posts before I replied, sorry guys!

Just as a brief note in reply to the TED talk posted by Andrew.. I used to be a bit chubby, depressed and generally negative in my world view.. Really, my ability to learn or even socially interact was a bit shit..
A few things in life happened and i turned it around, now in control of my emotional state, i conciously choose to be happy/positive and exercise.. Since this really only happend in the last year, i’ve managed to hammer through a tonne of training for my job and now munch away at 4 seasons of textfugu (which I’ve only been really dedicated to daily for about 3 months now)..
Take that TED talk as a life Maxim.. I can just back up every point he made to improving yourself psychologically by example.

Although neither Koichi or Hashi are ever going to make us truly happy (well, maybe if Koichi takes his shirt off again), they sure do a hell of a good job at trying.. The comedic, positive outlook to learning textfugu gives has no doubt kept me motivated and made others stick.. Out of everything it is its sense of perseverance and backing that a good parent gives which is the most outstanding.
No other learning resource (especially not school) has ever positively reinforced me like this textbook.

I could ramble for days about it’s usefulness and the incredible effect it has had on my own outlook to learning and discipline..

But for now, more fun: http://youtu.be/MpC8mHFb9Vs

    Edit: Washlet.. ^-^

Ok ok.. no one is belittling cake.. However, I’m not sure concentration is finite to that extent. Music as far as I am aware is processed in a very different area of the brain and actually uses different resources to be interpreted. If I study, I’m definitely not ‘listening’ to the music, it’s just there in the background.. The brain has a brilliant way of filtering and forgetting unwanted material.. Like there are times when I’m in a busy street or it’s loud in the office and I just zone out to the noise. Like it doesn’t even exist.

Similarly, you don’t walk down a street and are pay attention to everyone’s face and then remember them.. it would probably send you insane if you were constantly able to recall and bombard yourself with the full magnitude of your past experiences.. again, the same in the moment, your nervous system takes in so much information in any one second that the brain has to filter the unimportant parts..

The other point to bear in mind, is that the brain is addicted to stimulation.. if there is none (take when you are in bed in the dark with no noise) the mind chatters and makes it’s own stimulation.. That’s why I feel listening to music, having something else going on when I’m studying assists my mind in focusing.. it alleviates it’s need to distract me.. Meditation also helps with this..

Although, always instrumental music.. Lyrics get processed in the language section and therefore would distract you from language study. But, whatever works for you.. That’s just how i’ve rationalized and logicated my situations.. I have proof i swear..

Right, now that I have positively killed this thread.. It’s time to share something! I relax by watching this: http://youtu.be/voc9TrSVVOA

Yeh I always study with some music, it’s usually something ambient or instrumental though. I find anything with discernible lyrics to be off putting.. When I have two different languages flowing into my head by two separate sensory channels my brain just kind of farts..

And i’m absolutly not condoning iso/binural beats.. I have tried to use them before for things like sleep and running.. I just find i’m in control of my emotions / body without the need for any extra stimuli..
However, a good meditation before studying should work wonders.. Even just a 15 minute sit down in silence. Would help to quiet your mind and bring you into a relaxed state which is ideal for leaning (see alpha waves above). If I get in from work and my mind is all full of crap still, the last thing I can do is hold 15 vocab words in my head :(

Excellent.. that makes much more sense! Thank you both, that’s most helpful. This is what happens when you haven’t got to chapter six yet ha.
I see you guys posting everywhere, always helpful. Thanks for your time!

Something a bit more interesting is another sentence I have come across: 人生夢の如し
人生Life(Human)夢Dream.の.如しLike/Same as – I’ve seen a translation of “Life is but an empty dream” – I just can’t figure out where ‘Empty’ came from – I’m guessing it’s context, however I would take that sentence as: Life is like a dream or Life and Dreams are the same.

Right i’m going out on a limb here.. There are a few Kanji I recognize in here, also with the helps of Jisho I’ve clumped together a meaning.. I just can’t seem to wrap my head round the actual semantic of the sentence:

    大切な何かを思い出す画像
    大切な(Not important)何か(What?)を思い出す(To Remember)画像(Images)
So would you take this to mean: “Is it not important to remember the images?” or “Images do not remind me of something important” – ergh, that な is throwing me off..
    Anyone able to assist me?

I’d like to add a very similar comment – I’ve tried all sorts of different programmes and websites (Specifically Rosetta Stone – it was ‘lent’ to me Also things like iKnow etc.) but textfugu is the only place i’ve found to really make it all stick and just keep me motivated.
More for the fact that there are numerous articles dedicated to the art of practice and learning, which are really appreciated because it has helped me think abstractly and also logically about my learning and time management.

Just a big thank you all in all.. My personal development is steaming ahead thanks both of your own personal development ^-^

Holy crap.. totally missed this, Tickets on the door it is then!
Can we have a textfugu meet up? I’m coming from Brighton, would actually be nice to discuss my Japanese learning with people who are mildly interested!

    ‘clapping dem cheekz’ – Brilliant.

    EDIT: Food is my main motivator for heading there.. There are three decent Japanese restaurants in Brighton, but none of them serve a good bowl of ramen ;_;

Yggbert, thank you mate.. most helpful.

I thought about purchasing ‘Remembering the Kanji’ a while back, but got a little put off as back then I couldn’t even remember ’あ’ はは!

Kewl, will give it a bash, thank you for your advice. A little guidance goes a long way!

Yggbert: What are the ‘other resources’ you mentioned? I’d like to get an idea of accompaniments people use with textfugu.. especially for Kanji?

    Cheers for the help!

I’m glad I’m not just being a dumb ass and missing an entire portion of the lesson.

My vocab skills aren’t too bad, I’ve picked up a cornucopia of words from either my own research or my colleague (Old time JET’er) 「ぱいずり」 being my favorite!
But I’ve learned all of these through applying them to sentences with particles, rather than just repetition.
Meh, I’ll carry on as usual then. I do keep a pad full of hiragana + Kanji (although it’s very disorganized). Will just make myself some flash cards to keep in my wallet.
    Have a great weekend everyone!

I just started season 2! After putting off doing any Japanese studying (for over 6 months) I finally decided to start seriously mid way through December. A few weeks in and Hiragana is now a stroll.. Koichi teaching skills, absolute win.

Although my reply is on topic, it’s not quite on subject.
I just finished Season 1 (it was super effective). I like Anki, but have never found recall devices like Anki (iKnow) etc. to be enough. I can’t fault Koichi in any respect to his approach. My brain just likes it when I make shapes with a pen.
I’ve managed to really get a grip on Hiragana within a week or so.. I previously tried with iKnow/Rosetta-Stone which just failed hard at every aspect to teach me Hiragana and Japanese in general.
I’ve touched on Radicals (from the Kanji section) and am actually excited to start! However I will be writing them down just a couple of times so I can get the feel and shape of them engrained in the sensory part of my memory as well.

Just to add.. I find stroke order another hurdle.. Again, I hardly ever hand-write English anymore.. I doubt I would be doing so with Hiragana / Kanji etc. If I can get my hand to make them look correct, stroke order is a part I think is useless to remember (although will probably pick up later in the game). I would not fault anyone for writing an ‘N’ backwards so long as it is legible.

A quick browse through this topic and everyone seems to just post up the most obscure or strangest words/phrases they have learned. Excellent!

On my first inquiry to my colleague about learning Japanese (who JETed for a few years) he taught me a phrase that has now branched into many uses.

ぱいずりをください – Which if I’m not mistaken translates to: ‘please give me a titwank’ – from learning ください – I’ve been able to apply that to sentences ever since.. Make it obscure and funny as hell means it sticks in my head far more easier.
