Goodies! Thank you both! I shall research when I get home!
As it is I’m really bad about following the jvlogging community while I’m at work. Wednesdays are bad because of the 2.5 oyajis live broadcast lol.I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgWelcome to the party! As a welcoming gift, I bring you good news!
Because you’re an English citizen and living in England you can apply for a working holiday visa. Basically you don’t need any qualifications, just save up some money (in Canada it’s $2500, not sure what your requirements are, but I’d think like £1500) and have a return flight. Then you fill out an application and when you get approved you get 12 months abroad. As far as working, it’s apparently stupidly easy for native English speakers to get a job teaching.
EDIT: I just went and read the link I’ve given a couple paragraphs down and I was dead on with my guess of how much money you need.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-oOh98WaVI
That video is for Australia but it’s largely the same process. It’s also an hour and a half long so if you don’t watch the whole thing I don’t blame you lol. I watched it but I’m a very dedicated person.http://www.uk.emb-japan.go.jp/en/visa/working-holiday.html
Quick google search brought that up. You’ll probably be able to find more stuff if you’re at all familiar with UK government websites.Basically I was in the same boat as you – I was looking at having to get a university degree, but I didn’t want to wait 4 years to actually get there (not to mention the thousands of dollars for an education). Now that I’ve researched the WHV my schedule is massively accelerated to May 2015. You should come with! :P
Hope that helps/inspires! It’s certainly pushed me a lot harder.
P.S. sorry American citizens. You don’t have this option :( it may be a commonwealth thing but I’m not sure.

I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgI investigated the possibility of using a virtual Windows environment but it looks pretty hardware dependent.
Hey, if you’re willing to tackle the dependencies, be my guest. You are a better man than I ;)
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgAhhhh good good. I can busy myself there. Thank you!
Also, I love that in THAT one about music there’s a guy looking for music because the search is broken and couldn’t find the other music thread. It’s a dream within a dream man ;)
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgSorry, I got excited lol.
Basically Linux is a free, super open-ended operating system, and to describe it as “highly customizable” doesn’t even come close to illustrating how much you can do with it. Because Chrome OS is just a Google version of Linux I thought you’d be able to make the Linux version of Anki work. I could have even written you a script that would do all the work for you. BUT. It requires a LOT of other things to be in the OS that just aren’t there. Think of Chrome OS like a human body with a heart and a brain, but NONE of the other organs or blood vessels (just enough to connect the two), and adding Anki would be like trying to add a stomach to this heart/brain body. You need a great many more things in order for it to work. Does that make more sense?
To shorten that even further, basically the answer is no. I *will* investigate to see if there’s any sort of workaround but don’t get your hopes up. You’ll probably have more luck either installing Android OS or another Linux distribution like Ubuntu (I can advise you on that accordingly if you’d like).
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgDoing literally zero research, I am going to ASSUME it’s a Linux based environment, because they’re Google and that’s how they roll. With that said, Linux has the magical ability that can be summed up as “if you can dream it you can do it” which is to say, anything is possible. If I had hardware that would run Chrome OS I’d investigate, but instead I just have to assume there’s a way to pop open a terminal, point it at a repository, apt-get the Linux version of Anki (they have one of those, right?), and hope to hell the autoinstaller just works. If not, you can try to do a manual install, but that’s pretty time consuming, especially in a highly streamlined and customised environment. I’ll do some research and see if I can learn anything useful.
Also, Eihiko, can I just say – I think you’ve won this entire forum. The last like 12 posts on it are from you lol.
EDIT: NOPE. Don’t do it. They’ve stripped it of everything and you’ll fall into dependency hell just trying to get apt to work because NO DEBIAN SUPPORT.

I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgI’m glad I could share the smiles!!
And yes, Eihiko, you’re correct! I shan’t let them down!
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgJune 12, 2014 at 5:19 pm in reply to: TextFugu Season Completions for Great Motivation of Heart! #45420I haven’t been on here in a while. Been quite busy. Working overtime (EW!) because deadlines. In between doing things to stay alive, I’ve been trying to keep up with Anki and RTK.
So today I’ve finally made some time for TF and finished season 3. Also two days ago I got to 100 kanji, and there are only a couple out of those that I have any trouble remembering. Despite the fact that things are going a bit slow right now, I do feel pretty good about the progress I’ve been making for the amount of time I’ve actually been able to put into it. I was even issued good luck from Chris Broad (of the Abroad in Japan channel on youtube), so that’s pretty rad.
I also have my brother living with me for a little while, which kinda cramps my studying habits a bit. Oh well, nothing to do but keep going, right? Allons-y!
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgThe Japanese sure love their jazz, eh? Lots of jazz stations. Not that I’m complaining!!
Thanks ロブ!!Cimmik, I will investigate that! Thanks!
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgWow that was a pretty solid writeup by Aikibujin. Thanks for sharing that!
I’m taking it pretty slow with the RTK stuff but because of how my schedule works and what I do as a job, it’s actually very easy to get some kanji in during the day, then I do my TF stuff in the evening. It’s just how I roll.
I think it’s mostly the sentences that are jamming up my time. Because I try really hard to say them out loud properly (or as close as I can get). That comes from being a (former) music student. I just feel weird leaving it at something other than perfect. Other than that though I go through the kana stuff pretty quick and it makes my numbers look really good lol. 100 or so cards in like 4 minutes. That said, I’m spending a lot of time on the vocab. So I think I can shave off a lot of time with that.
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgI’m approaching the end of Season 3 and even my Anki is starting to become inordinately time consuming as well. I’ve also started RTK 1 which doesn’t really help shorten the time spent in Anki.
Anyways, I’d also be curious to see what others have to say. You’re certainly not alone, Ruben.
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgRun in compatibility mode maybe? I don’t know if that’ll fix it, since I refuse to use Windows 8. If I bought a computer I would ‘downgrade’ immediately.
That’s what I did when Vista came out. I installed XP while I was on the bus on the way home from the store. Anyways, derailing the thread here lol…

I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgI’m not sure how effective the post-it technique is anyway. It can only work for a limited number of words, mostly nouns and adjectives – what would you stick a post-it to for おどろく(to be surprised) or ときどき(sometimes)? :P
The post-it thing is great for nouns. If you live by yourself. Probably not with other people, so fair enough.
HOWEVER.
Do not underestimate my willingness to stick things onto other things.
Verbs?
Easy.
XKCD or Cyanide & Happiness comics. Pick some things that have verbs that are in your list. I’ll use ねます which is insanely easy but hey, here it is:
It’s hilarious, so the word sticks. I have 16 or so of these guys just for verbs.
Then again, I live by myself, and I like putting things on walls. And it’s just something that happens to work for me. With time, I will find a way to demonstrate abstract concepts using sticky notes. Just you wait.
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgMay 26, 2014 at 5:29 am in reply to: TextFugu Season Completions for Great Motivation of Heart! #45256I meant to put in here a while ago that I finished season 2. I’m a little bit into season 3 – just got through the を and に particles. Yay me! I’ve also got Remember The Kanji Vol 1 on its way (it may actually arrive today!) which I will be pillaging over the next few months. I know, I know; I won’t be learning the readings. But I feel like it’s too much to ask of my brain to learn the kanji, the meaning, the on and kun readings, and when to use what. It may take longer this way but I’ll feel a lot more confident about using them.
^Tobias^; I know how you feel! Season 2 felt like it took forever!! I’ve been taking the whole thing really slow (as in, I’ve been at it over a month now). Basically any time there’s a Japanese character, I write a bunch of stuff down. It really smashes the knowledge into your brain but holy sweet hellfire it takes a long time. And I go through a lot of pens. I’ve got this notebook that’s about half full of writing.
I haz a blog http://maninjapanchannel.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLQzB-1u-dgI’ve been finding that I have to mix and match resources. I’m not at season 5 yet (just starting 3) but as far as kanji… I’m just not getting it using TF. WaniKani is good but it’s a much slower pace, although it does a great job of actually jamming it into your brain. I’ve just ordered Remembering the Kanji by James Heisig (you’ve probably heard of it) so I’m hoping that’ll help. It IS more for writing and knowing the meaning of the kanji, not the various readings and such. But I’m really finding that no single method or resource is perfect. TF is great and is still the backbone of my learning structure, but I’m also grabbing at other things to kind of round it out.
Besides kanji stuff using Anki, I’ve also been committing a day each week to JUST learning kanji (I’ve even got a song for it and everything… it’s… it’s good that I live alone, I think). It can be brutal but it’s super important to learn if you want to advance. Quite honestly, if you’ve been able to make the effort to get to season 5 and you’re still able to make time for it, you can DEFINITELY make time to do a kanji day.
You’ll get there though! Just, like Joel said, come up with a new way to learn. Don’t limit yourself to TF or WK – search around some. You’ll be fine :)
