Another cool thing I found! (Okay technically a friend of mine found it, but I’m taking the credit because he isn’t on this forum so he can’t defend himself)

    http://www.fluentin3months.com/learning-with-texts/

It looks pretty cool. It reminds me of the JTA (Japanese Through Anime) program, actually.

This is more of a request for motivation than it is saying “here’s what I’ve accomplished”. Which maybe is the wrong use of this thread, but this feels like the most appropriate one. As with any of my long posts, there’s a tl;dr for you at the bottom. There aren’t as many jokes as I would like either.

So basically the last few days I haven’t done anything. I haven’t even really touched Anki, let alone continued with TF stuff. I’m right at the end of Season 2 and I’ve just been stuck. It’s a combination of factors – mainly my car. It’s so close to working (at the time of writing I’m literally held back by a single washer that, without it, makes my car spray fuel everywhere). It’s taking up so much of my time and effort and by the time I’ve got free time, I’m just exhausted. Between that and trying to have some kind of a social life, I’m just never really feeling it.

Of course, this problem becomes circular. When I go a couple days without studying, I open up Anki and it’s like bee-tee-dubs, you have so much work to do. And then I don’t really feel pumped to start. A few days ago I cleared all my Anki stuff and then went to bed without doing anything in TF because I was just super unhappy about Anki.

Also, slight confession: When I started this, I promised myself I’m going to stay away from anime. I don’t want to be spending all of my time watching TV instead of doing something useful with myself. I held out for a long time, too. Then I decided I wanted to try some Japanese kids TV, like a Sesame Street sort of thing. But I’ve had issues locating anything to watch, so I said FINE! I’ll watch something!!! So I had this long list and I picked at random DokiDoki! Precure. For the first 3 or 4 minutes I was like “this is stupid” and then by the end of the first episode I was like “welp, guess I’m watching ALL OF THEM”

So I’ve been watching a lot of DokiDoki, and while I’m loving every second of it, I’m not spending that time actually learning things.

I’ve also picked up a volunteer teaching position at an elementary school, which only seems to be once a week, which is fine. But I’m also about to start some martial arts…ing. My schedule is only getting tighter and tighter. With work, volunteering, becoming a ninja, inevitable repairs on my car, ingesting more Precure, and talking to other human beings from time to time, I need to get Japanese in there. I know there’s room for it, but I need to figure out how to motivate myself when I’m feeling tired/not like working.

    TL;DR VERSION

I have a lot of things going on and haven’t been studying as I should. I need help getting motivated.

I appreciate your adoption of the term “Textonion Fugunites”.

“Sugar” is the important part, not the container in which it is housed! Ermahgerd, vercerb! :D

And you know what, when I get there, yes I will. And I will post a picture just for you. Make ya twitch a little ;)

Scott, I suppose it depends on your experience. I talked to some folks when I was in France (in English; my French consists of swearing and a few food words) and they found conversation with Quebecers to be difficult and at times near impossible. Also I dated someone who was fully bilingual and who had learned Parisian French, and she had issues with talking to people in Quebec. As far as the Creole bit, I wasn’t aware they were that different. I am totally willing to accept my ignorance :P

I’m still only in Season 2 (just about to start 3) but I’ve started using wanikani as well and I’d comfortably second that suggestion. It’s very well put together, despite being a closed beta and all.

As for the rest… well… I’m not there yet.

This is kind of an incredibly late reply, and maybe it’s now irrelevant to you, but maybe some other folk will appreciate it. Or maybe YOU will appreciate. Who knows?

    Right, so.

What I’ve just done is run around my house with post-its and on them I’ve written down the vocab words that I come across in TextFugu (in hiragana of course!!). Then I shove them on the thing that the word suggests it should go on. I’ve also left space on them so that, perhaps at some point in the future, I can add the kanji version as well. At this point there aren’t very many, and there are certain obvious things that don’t work. For example, the last I checked there are VERY FEW subways in my house. Too few, I’ll say too few.

Anyways, as I get more words of things that I own, I’ll start putting up more of these. The goal is to make myself look like I’m a complete asshat who labels everything he owns. Sorry, typo, I meant to say that the goal is to encounter these words, and go “hey this bag of sugar could also be referred to as さとう” or “man I’m sure glad I live alone so nobody else sits at my つくえ” or, more likely, I can stand in the middle of my living room holding a post-it that says “ともだち” and sigh at my own loneliness.

    (last one is a joke)

I’ve sorta solved the problem. Diagnosed it, really.

Chrome is just rebelling. In fact, it may be hiding some Skynet code. No download links are working for me, and that’s on two separate computers. Even with a reinstall of Chrome. Serious tomfoolery.

Thank you for checking though! I’ll just use Firefox when I get home I guess, it seems to be willing to do what I tell it.

    Grr.

Aw, well thanks! If I may honest for a moment, I’ve never had my writing called “moist” before.

I have gone over to wanikani and put my name on the list and am awaiting my invitation!

I’m about to post my own intro thread but upon exploring this forum’s structure and etiquette (which is fairly different than my home at vwvortex) I happened to see this and had a chuckle. The title is a pun AND I LOVE PUNS MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF and I actually made this exact joke yesterday, even though I’m not from Ohio. But I learned the word and was like wow, Japanese people in Ohio are probably pretty sick of this.

    Anyways, good stuff.
