Joel: Speaking of which, how long has that quote button been there?
Also, “a lot” is two words. =P
I first noticed it when I logged on this morning around 6am UK time. It wasn’t there when I checked the forums last night. So, sometime in that period it was introduced. I have seen a few members such as missing use the quote option before but never knew how to do it. Now that there’s a clickable option it’s a good feature to have.
I’ve noticed a few spelling mistakes in Koichi’s posts too. I should remember to hit the bounty button when possible :D
These changes sound very positive and I’m looking forward to the next update more than ever now. I’m no expert on blogs or web sites but if Word Press is restricting some features Koichi wants on the site then it’s the best decision to dump it. Tablet and smartphone support is always welcome. Keeping track of where you are is definitely a good idea.
As for the features to be implemented in the near future, I think using a built in srs instead of Anki is a good idea too. Alot of us have wanted better forum features so this is also welcome. The most important thing is new content. There’s already a new lesson up and the advanced section has debuted.
I’m very happy with this announcement and congratulate the TF team on doing an excellent job :)
As I’ve been working on the next versino of TextFugu, I’ve figured out a few things.
A lot of the things I wanted to do were too complicated for WordPress (what TextFugu’s built on).
Just like the reasoning for working on the next version of TextFugu, we should just take it all the way and get it done right. Basically, we should bite the bullet and get off of WordPress. But, all the work from the last month isn’t lost – it will definitely be used in the next version. I’ll also be applying a lot of it to the current version of TextFugu. It’ll just continue on the way it’s set up now, though the update will be spread out a bit more. You should be seeing a lot of fixes, updates, and new chapters starting to roll out here pretty soon.
Also, we’ll start working on the next version of TextFugu again. I’m so tired of WordPress. It doesn’t let you do a lot of the things I want it to be able to do. It also is a terrible way to keep track of things (aka everything is pretty manual when I want to connect one item with another, ex. kanji and their radicals).
We’re going to start out really simple with the (new) TextFugu v3. On launch, I hope to shoot for these features:
Make it work on mobile / tablet (might happen with the v2.5 rollouts as well, we’ll see).
Have it keep track of where you are… no more bookmarking your location in the text over and over again.
Lighter weight. Right now things are pretty heavy.
Simple quizzes of some kind… though the focus will be on making you recall more than traditional quizzes, if that makes sense. After that I have a huge list of other things that I want tackled (built-in srs not using Anki, finishing the rest of the seasons, better community features… and so many more), but that’s a little farther away.
So, basically, I wanted to apologize about the slowdown on this. You’ll be seeing a good amount of the fruits of labor from this push, but the better stuff will be arriving a little later.
More updates to come very soon.

Hmm you bring up some good points Yggbert. I’ll keep both Read the Kanji website and RTK vol. 1 in mind.
missingno15: What’s it gonna be called?
Friends? :D
Yggbert:
姦しいKanji with 3 women in it, word meaning noisy. I found this hilarious.
There’s more here on this page http://www.tofugu.com/2012/06/05/misogynistic-kanji/
I agree with andrew. That is pretty funny. Sorry ladies :D
Great banter between Mister M and Bbvoncrumb :D
I could sign up for the closed alpha and the closed beta but I prefer to wait for the finished product. Hope we get to see the finished Wani Kani by the end of the year.
Thinking of your own mnemonics is extremely useful. I heard this works for RTK too. Some of Heisig’s ones are a bit wild.
@ andrew
I think Spain will have a difficult time retaining the trophy. No team has won the European Championships back to back or won the it as well as the World Cup in succession. Italy did a good job keeping Spain at bay.Bendtner’s had some shockers in an Arsenal shirt but I’d say Emmanuel Eboue was worse. I’ll never forgive or forget how he conceded that penalty in the dying seconds against Liverpool at the Emirates in April last year. You can watch the footage shot by a fan on camera phone here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiWtoydTYN0
I don’t know why Eboue had such a huge cult status at Arsenal. He was average at best, made alot of mistakes and didn’t really contriubte much to the team. I just got the imperssion he didn’t really give 100% each match and was quite happy to do the bare minimum to earn his pay cheque.
Although Van Persie is at the Euros and his future won’t be decided til after, I get the feeling he wants to leave. I may be and hope I am wrong but he hasn’t exactly been positive or said much regarding his future. Reports today say Arsenal are close to signing Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud. It’s the first time I’ve heard his name and have no idea who he is. If the deal goes ahead that will be the second striker to join this summer. Could that indicate Wenger is prepared to let RVP go or is it a replacement for either Chamakh or Park.
I’m surprised too that none of those JET type programs require you to know Japanese. I certainly wouldn’t live in a country without having learnt the language at least a bit first. I’ve never been to Japan but I guess in the big cities there’s alot of English on signs and in shops that help foreginers get around in day to day life.
You cold mention how there’s less sound combinations in Japanese then there are in English, which in a way makes it easier to learn. You could also say how about written Japanese looks better than written English. Although that’s a personal opinion, Kanji is beautiful to look at and makes sentences more interesting to read.
Good luck with it. Let us know how it goes. I’ll watch it too if it gets uploaded to YouTube.
Currently there’s only mnemonics for kanji and possibly for some kanji vocab if I remember correctly. The following is from info about the upcoming TF update: “Mnemonics for (almost) all vocab, even ones that aren’t from kanji you’ve learned.”
So it looks like we may get mnemonics for non kanji vocab too. My own mnenomics pretty much helped me learn the 50+ verbs in Season 3. Without them It would of taken longer to remember them through raw memorization.
Hmm, that’s strange. I don’t get any files at all in the media folder. Here a screenshot of how the radicals1 archive looks on my computer when I open it up with WinRar http://postimage.org/image/qah4w7kjb/full/
@ Chigun
I find equally focusing on grammar, vocab and kanji is the best method for me. Although it is tempting at times to just do kanji and then go back to grammar. It’s best not to delete any files or folders to do with Anki. The .anki file is the file which Anki reads and adds the information to the deck. The media folder is needed if the deck contains audio files or in the case of radicals, some .png images. In the Kanji decks there’s no media folder at all.
The Radicals1 archive should have a media folder with nothing in it. Redownload it and try adding again.
Finally got a decent grasp of all the verbs from Season 3. Took me longer than I wanted but at least I know them now. Mnemonics definitely helped alot. Next up sentence enders :)
