I’ve been an on-and-off anime fan for 15 years now I think..? I haven’t followed any new series however… but I can say that it was the springboard for my fascination with Japanese culture.
I don’t look down at people who want to learn Japanese because of anime. I believe it’s still a big part of the culture and can be a good motivator – it depends on your passion for it. For me, it wasn’t enough.
What’s really motivated me, however, is manga. I read scanlations but it’s not enough. I want to be able to buy a copy of my favourite non-licenced manga from my local Kinokuniya and read it. It’s really compelling for me since a lot of good series aren’t licenced and I can never get a copy of it legally aside from the original Japanese.
Also, I hate waiting for scanlation updates!
