I got my Forever membership at a massive discount, but when you consider how much a regular textbook costs and how much more content it has, I *still* wouldn’t say I’ve had my money’s worth XD Well, I guess Koichi’s presence around the site, willingness to interact with users and accept feedback, fairly regular updates, and giving great personal and thoughtful advice via email added to the value of the site back when I started, but with the state of affairs now, recent buyers are getting even less (despite there being slightly more in the way of lessons).
I don’t actually know but I’m thinking that if you can find a Japanese equivalent to cracked.com, you’ll surely find your answer ;)
If you’re not confident with your Japanese skills, would it really be appropriate to be teaching other people? I don’t mean this personally, but if I were to join a Japanese language club at school, if not a native with teaching experience I’d at least like to have someone who knows what they’re doing, is confident and knowledgeable and who has good pronunciation (so that I’m not learning how to say things wrong). It’s great that you’re taking the initiative to start something like this, but are you the right person for the job is what I’m wondering.
When I started Uni, I met up with a student from Japan; that didn’t exactly go well… It was a real eye-opener, showing me just how much I sucked at the language XD Before that I thought “Hey, I’m not doing too badly, maybe this will go all right” – TextFugu maybe gives you a little *too* much confidence, throwing about terms like “intermediate” when you’re really still a complete novice (even by the end of the content there now, I know). The guy was *really* nice and we’d talked over Facebook somewhat before the semester started but I just couldn’t face him again afterwards. I’m shy and a bit awkward at the best of times but this was pretty painful, I honestly felt slightly queasy and exhausted afterwards; I can laugh about it now though, thankfully :P Still feel bad that I never really talked to him at all afterwards – we never met up again and I probably didn’t message him on FB for most of the year (he had many, many, many other friends at uni though, so that’s ok, I guess haha).
Not intending to put you off, just giving an honest account of my experience XD You could do much better than I did, no way of knowing till you give it a go :D

じゃ、寝るわ。Ok, that’s the first minute or so done; I’ll maybe try doing the rest later. Boy, that was much more difficult than the last one haha. Good thing YouTube can play videos at 0.5x speed (though only used it for a couple of lines, and it still wasn’t easy) ;) Almost certain there are mistakes since for a few parts I just had to put down a best guess, having never heard the relevant expression before.

@Maria: I was just about to say “Oh, you should send him the links to these two threads and just tell him you’re a bit concerned, that there’s a bit of unrest among the forum-goers” but then I considered that I’m the most outspoken one on the matter and he might end up sending his KGB agents over to take me out D: I’m one of the longest-serving and most active members of this forum, and while I’ve gone off TextFugu itself, I still enjoy posting here; would be a shame if I were to disappear unexpectedly in the night…
Surely if you’re learning to handwrite kana, it’s not unreasonable to expect you to learn the common handwritten versions. Definitely, you should be made aware of the common computer and printing fonts, but if you’re actually writing them by hand you don’t want to be writing in that style. I started off writing the “joined-up” き because I didn’t even know there was a difference but now I write it the “proper” way.

If your teacher is adorable and enthusiastic, that’s great! Better than being traditional *and* a miserable old crone ;)
@Tsetycoon13: Do you mean major in Japanese or just take a class? You’ve been doing Japanese long enough now that majoring in it would be a pointless exercise, I’d imagine haha. There’s this YouTuber whose videos I watch occasionally, her Japanese is excellent (even though she tries to be too “super kawaii” which is annoying) but she still insists on her plan of going to university for a Japanese degree and I have no idea why – she’ll probably be better than a lot of final year students by the time she starts XD

Stumbled across that the other day for whatever reason; can get the gist of what’s going on at least. A quick search for でっせ doesn’t show anything, so my guess is that if it’s colloquial then it’s not very common. Could always be a typo :PUsing Japanese Google? Yeah, cause so many native Japanese people take JLPT…
I think the way he was enunciating was to try and make it clearer for them. Didn’t really work though :P
If we could go back on topic for a sec, what does じゃね mean when Scotch says 「。。。COOLじゃね。」? Is it something like じゃない? I tried looking it up but didn’t get very far.
レフリジータ… surely he could have told them to say “fridge” instead; how many people actually say “refrigerator” on a regular basis? To tell the truth, I didn’t even know how to spell it correctly, I see it that infrequently :P I didn’t realise that there’s a ‘d’ in “fridge” but none in “refrigerator”, that just seems weird.
Also, it took me a while to figure out how that game at the end was supposed to work – the first drawing was banana, so I thought the next would start with ‘a’ since it was all supposed to be in English.
Hm, I don’t think it’s *quite* the same as the long お sound, I’d say there’s usually a slight waver in the voice to emphasise that it’s not all one word. For example, しょう and しょを wouldn’t sound exactly the same. Same goes for something like しょう おすし, there’d probably be some kind of vocal distinction there to show it’s two words; it wouldn’t be pronounced しょおおおおおおすし, I don’t think.
It’s hard to really describe what I mean by “waver” or “vocal distinction”, you’ll just have to listen to more Japanese people speaking and you’ll get the hang of it :D
