I’ve had a rough look into learning Mandarin a few times in the past but never really fancied it. I can kinda remember the tones; on their own, they don’t really seem that hard, but I’m sure when you’re trying to talk at any reasonable speed, remembering and pronouncing the tones correctly must be a nightmare :P It’s interesting to see how many words have the same/similar characters to the Japanese counterpart; that should make learning vocab a bit quicker if you already know the kanji form, I suspect.

Having done Remembering the Kanji, do you think you’ll do Remembering the Hanzi? :P

Might be already too late, but I’d recommend against using TextFugu. If you’ve been able to hold basic conversation and could read fairly well, this isn’t the course for you; this is for the “absolute beginner”, going up to maybe “middle beginner”, despite what Koichi might say. Since you’ve done it before, that foundation will be there and a lot of it will come back to you soon enough after refreshing yourself and with a bit of practice. It might be a good course for having a look over to jog your memory if it was free, but it’s not. For a much, much better (and free) alternative, I suggest having a look at guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar. Don’t assume you’re starting from scratch, your brain probably remembers more than you might think (which is a little odd considering you *are* your brain) :P

Here’s a nice little video on the subject from one of my favourite YouTube polyglots, Moses McCormick:

Joel is *asking* a question and not *answering* one? What is this I don’t even

Yeah, I’m thinking it’s short for 来なくては(ならない)too but I’m also confused as to how it fits in.
This page (http://www.epochrypha.com/japaneseold/verbs/verbs_rule_past_volitional.html) shows [た-stem] + ろう as being “past volitional”, then at the bottom says it’s actually “an outdated presumptive”. I’m guessing that means it’s a combination of た-form and だろう. Assuming it is, here’s some examples of だろう+に (http://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=%E3%81%A0%E3%82%8D%E3%81%86%E3%81%AB&ref=sa); I’m not totally sure how those two come together to mean that but I’m guessing there’s some part after the に that’s implied. I’m guessing こんなに早く死ななかったろうに means something like “might not have died so soon”.

Let me know if you manage to understand it any better with that, or come to a better interpretation :)

@zeldaskitten: “active and updated often” are words I’d say described TextFugu back when I started, and look at it now :P Not that you can be *100%* sure it’ll go the same way, but it’s something to be wary of at least. I guess he’s got Viet to work on it too though; when Hashi was hired, he did do a little here on TextFugu but he was mostly working on writing for Tofugu, I think. Still, I’d rather they finish something before they release it for a change – being in alpha for years is always going to be risky.

in reply to: would you ever work as a host/hostess? #41420

Unless they have host bars specifically for hosts who only speak English, then no :P You also need to be attractive, fond of drinking, outgoing and great at talking to people, so there’s that too…

Sounds great, good luck with it all :D It should be easier doing Mandarin now that you know all the language learning tricks from having done Japanese already ;) I’ve heard that the hardest parts of Chinese are the characters and the tones, and you’ve pretty much got the first one down haha. I’ve also heard that the grammar is pretty easy in comparison to other languages.

Be sure to check in here from time to time to let us know how you’re doing with it, I’d be pretty interested to know how it goes. And there’s also that you’re the only admin left, what with Koichi abandoning us, Hashi leaving, and Sheepy being who knows where :P Are you the oldest member to still visit this forum or did missingno15 join here before you?

Here’s an interesting couple of graphs to consider:

Why the victims in Japan and not some other country? Happens all over the world, doesn’t it? It’s a great cause, definitely, I’m just curious as to what drew you to Japan.

@Joel: If the search function you’re thinking of is the one I am too, it never seemed to work properly for me. If I remember right, the list of threads it showed was not an exhaustive list at all.

I know what you mean about Wind Waker HD – the lower resolution graphics have more charm to them. The original seems more colourful too while the HD seems a bit washed out. Will be interesting to see better gameplay videos nearer the time but I doubt it’ll look much better than the original.

I’ve only played the original versions of Monkey Island 1 + 2, been meaning to get the special edition. The upgrade from original to HD for those games looks a lot better than for Wind Waker :P Still really fond of the original graphical style but the upgrade looks pretty well done; the voice acting too would be good. I don’t think they need to re-do 3 at all, it’s perfect as it is, not really much to improve :D The art style is just so gorgeous and timeless, even after 16 years it looks stunning to me :P I’ve also played 4 and the first chapter or two of 5, which I’ve kinda left by the wayside for a while now haha (not cause it was bad or anything, I just sorta forgot about it).

And yes, Koichi is a fan – back when he used to come to the forum regularly, he made the “three-headed monkey” joke directly towards me :D That was pretty awesome.

@zeldaskitten: “I thought about it.. but then I didn’t.” – Oh snap. I care enough to moan about it constantly, but I just never get around to doing anything about it XD

@John Schmitz: Don’t worry, it’s a perfectly reasonable question, you weren’t to know how common it’s been. The forum hasn’t had a search feature for 2 years since it was set up (think the old one before that might have, though), and now that one’s finally been added, it doesn’t even work XD

in reply to: Beginner-friendly Japanese manga? #41397

Oh, I was actually thinking it was from a different picture (below). Just getting a little mixed-up there :P Same game though.

And I agree: Majora’s Mask and Wind Waker are my favourite Zelda games too :D All the other games are near enough as awesome, but those two stand out just *slightly* from the rest ;)

…sorry for not contributing anything to the original point of the thread and going on a tangent XD

Great profile pic, Gustav; Majora’s Mask, if I’m not mistaken ;)

    彼の体型じゃ既製のサイズに合わないよ。
His figure does not suit ready-to-wear clothing sizes.

What does the じゃ do in this sentence? Is it some colloquial form of が?

in reply to: A little sad #41364

Oh, it’s not that I don’t think it’ll *ever* come, just that it won’t come when he says it will ;) It’ll surely be a long time before any updates are finished, it always is.
