Where is it you’re seeing it pronounced two different ways? If you’ve not even reached Season 2 yet, I’m just curious as to where else you’re coming across it.
On a related note, I’m not fond of the way the lessons are indexed: in the contents page they’re listed purely by their name. That may sound the obvious choice, but it’s not great – it would be more helpful if the names told you exactly (or at least a rough summary of) what the lesson is about e.g. instead of calling it just “Developing a sense of identity”, you could at least reference 私 or “I” or something similar. Some lessons like “な Adjectives” do what they say on the tin, but there are a number that don’t; it would make it a lot easier to find what you’re looking for if there was a better indication of the contents. With the “Identity” example again, a few pages in the title is “The many ways to say “I” ” – now that’s a *much* better title for the lesson as a whole, no? :P
I’m also wondering why it was corrected to さん and not さんびき. Maybe they were trying to keep it simple?
I think the * line was a bit easier for me because I was using rikai-kun, and クセに came up instantly as “and yet; though; while; in spite of”, and 人並み was listed as “being average (capacity, looks, standard of living); ordinary”. The “standard of living” part jumped out as being the most sensible interpretation. What does the scanlation for that line say, anyway? Does it references classes or just “ordinary people” or similar?
Further to discussion in a different thread, I’m still not really sure where counters are supposed to come in a sentence. Is it just 三匹の猫, or could you say 猫三匹, or 三匹猫, or some other configuration? I’m sure I’ve seen it used something like 猫が三匹います too. I’ve looked at several different resources for learning counters, but they don’t always seem to address this, and the ones that do say different things and don’t mention the others. It seems like something I really should know by now…
Is the answer to this “mini-lesson” our interpretation of just the * line, or the dialogue as a whole?
I’ve got a very VAGUE sense of what’s going on here. I needed to use rikai-kun a lot, but there are a number of words that I do know, including this kanji behemoth 大手消費者金融 – makes me feel like I’m reading Chinese :P
I think the * line is something like “Though below the ordinary (class), live as anyone else does”. The person is part of the working class(?), but bank loans allow them to live a better lifestyle, similar to the middle class. HOLD ON, no, they’re saying they’re refused loans because of their low status, but utilising the black market can help them live this improved lifestyle. Something just clicked in my brain there :P
I’m a little confused as to why they’ve ended the first line with はよ, and not just one or the other. Can they be used together like that?
Much more interesting lesson than AKB48, but maybe that’s just me ;)
It’s not really a “random” extra syllable – I agree that ワイト would work better, but adding the ホ is like when people overemphasise the H and pronounce it hwhite or hwhale or cool hwhip.
… I’m sorry :S If those are just amateur mnemonics, that’s totally fine; handcrafting them in such a way that works for you is great, whether they work for other people or not. Koichi, however, needs to be held to a higher standard: he does this stuff for a wide audience (and gets paid), so should be making mnemonics that are most likely suitable for everyone. That’s why I took issue with the keywords used, because I thought they were the work of a professional :P God knows I’ve come up with my own mnemonics that aren’t dead-on, that wouldn’t help other people for being too abstract or “roundabout”, but work for me because my brain happens to interpret them in a very specific way haha.
If I used “Rain… Ah man!” as a mnemonic, that would make me remember it as あま :P And “yucky” would make me think やき; neither of them sound close enough.
ゆき sounds more like “You key” (and by “more like” I mean “exactly like”) – you could say something like “YOU KEY-ed my car!?” “It was an accident! I was running to get to my own car, slipped on the SNOW, and crashed into the side of yours!”.
あめ sounds more like the start of the word “America” (and by “more like” I mean “exactly like”, again! Seriously, Koichi’s mnemonic skills suck) – you could say something like “There’s been an explosion at the flag factory! You look up and see hundreds of A-ME-rican flags RAIN-ing from the sky!” or “Captain A-ME-rica doesn’t like carrying an umbrella, so when it starts RAIN-ing, he just holds his shield up high instead.”
Whether or not you consider those new mnemonics good, surely the choice of keywords is better? No idea why he chose “Yucky” and “Ah man” when there are much better options out there.
Counters are weird, especially 人; they really need to be taken on a case by case basis. I tend not to get caught up in learning what’s kun and what’s on because it’s not that important.
Plenty of time to learn vocab in jail ;)
AstralFox, you confused me there, I had to reread his post several times. He’s saying it in the same way you’d say “That’ll teach you to touch my stuff!”… which now that I think about it, while correct, doesn’t really make sense.
Yeah, that’s another point: it might be better to write questions on a topic of more general interest. You and missing may be really deep into the whole “idol culture” thing, but if you’re not (as I’m guessing most people here aren’t), it’s really hard to care at all. Plus there’s a layer of context that’s missing if you’re not clued in (what exactly is a “charm point”?). It’s like if you were on an English-learning forum and gave people questions on a passage on My Little Pony… which is actually surprisingly similar to the whole idol thing, when you think about it.
You can’t delete threads or posts, sorry; if you ever make a mistake, it lives on forever :P
Too difficult for me. Maybe I’m just lagging behind everyone, but I’ve a feeling you’re overestimating the skill level here. You and missingno15 might be able to answer stuff like this, but I’ve got no idea… I doubt many people will get the questions on dialect without looking it up – most learner material is in standard Japanese, so stuff like that’s quite an “advanced” topic (unless it’s a specific interest, I guess).
@Sakij7: I’d say it’s closer to “alpha”, since he’s not actually even close to finishing. Definitely not worth $120 as it is, but god knows what he’s going to charge once it’s done. You should let him how disappointing it is – if everyone did, he’d be more likely to actually get things sorted. I don’t think anyone does though…
