Less reformatting, MOAR lessons! I’ve already got a “Forever” account but if I didn’t, I’d have left long ago. The only people able to use TextFugu to its full potential are the ones who join once it is all finished (i.e. people in the war against the Terminators) and all the main content has been written, so they get a complete experience from start to finish and don’t have to abandon ship halfway through (to move to a bigger, better ship). I know there is only a captain and his first mate at the moment, but stop painting the figure head and get on with building the rest of the boat! If the boat can’t even get us to Treasure Island, what is the point in making it look pretty or making the crew’s beds more comfy? (These nautical jokes doing anything for ye?)

But seriously, the more time you spend “finding yourself” (like the plot of some terrible chick flick), the less time you’ll have to study Japanese and stop sucking – it’s really true when Koichi says “Just ****ing do it!”.
Also, at what level are you going to stop calling yourself a beginner? JLPT 1 equivalent? Semi-fluent? Completely fluent? Kanken 1 equivalent? NEVER?!?!? It’s this kinda shit that’s bringing you down; you’re only “sucking” at Japanese because you keep telling yourself you are. Yes, in relation to natives, you suck, but in relation to other learners (which is who you should be comparing yourself to), you’re doing pretty good, you’re doing most of the stuff you need to be doing to get better.
This emo phase will pass and you’ll be back: I remember a while ago you said the same thing and returned after a while anyway. Stop baww’ing and just get on with it, man! And I mean that in the nicest possible way :P
If that’s you gone for good then “ciao”, I guess. You and your AK47 will be missed ;)
Next time you write a lang-8 post, also type in English what you were trying to say: 1. It helps them understand what the post is *supposed* to mean, but also 2. Using any English in your post will make it more likely that corrector will try and give you advice in English (if they are fluent enough). It’s helped me before (and it was actually suggested by one of my correctors) :)

It really is a magical place, where there are muffins galore, and Youtube video embedding works just like THAT *clicks fingers* (embedding a video makes other people more likely to listen to the song you’re wanting to hear, as studies have shown [FuguFish et al, 1993]).
Oh yeah, and there are rainbows and cats and rainbow cats there too. I wouldn’t wanna miss out if I were you, just sayin’.
Bad news (for me anyway): turns out I can’t take ANY Japanese classes. They just can’t fit into my timetable at all – been trying for ages and ages to think if there might be some ways to miss out on some lectures and catch up later, but no matter what way I try to jiggle things about, it just doesn’t work >.< I'll still continue with self-studying Japanese but it's just a bummer I can't include it into my Uni work.
My last resort is to try and get into a Norwegian class, but I'm waiting to get a reply to my email asking if my Japanese and French skills count as appropriate experience (I didn't take any languages during high school at the level they want). All the other languages were either useless to me or they were uninteresting. Norwegian seems kinda cool, but it looks like I might not get to do ANY languages if I'm not allowed this one…

Well I just moused-over とする which told me what it was. I assumed that link was just going to say the same thing, so I didn’t bother looking at it. Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn’t it.
So what are the differences between「volitional + とする」、「～てみる」and「ようにする」? Are they all just ways to say the same thing?
@Elenkis: He began long ago, so he’s either an idiot or he just likes making people feel bad about themselves (“Well if HE’S a beginner, wtf am I then?! :( ). Best just to leave him in his own little, AK47-filled world ;)

@Mark: You wouldn’t call a Japanese person “slanty-eyed”, would you? It’s just not a nice thing to say. The fact that you seem to not know that “paki” is a racist remark is a bit strange…

の is used as a substitute for the noun in question – you could call の a… “generic noun”, I think?6. Learning kanji is hard. (Pffffffft!! It’s a piece of cake :P)

の is used here to turn verb-phrases into nouns. There’s a name for it that I can’t quite remember.
“I saw **the act of Winter eating sushi**.8. Why are you eating sushi?
Could be any type of person saying this. の used at the end of a sentence is feminine… unless it’s
a question, I believe: then it would be neutral.

2. *Please* don’t use that word. It makes you sound a complete reta– uh, “idiot”.Well how are you supposed to learn verbs in dictionary form if all you know is “masu” form? Be patient, my child ;)
