@Watarimono: Go here – http://www.textfugu.com/bb/topic/going-back-and-forth/ – and join the club :P It seems several of us are starting University pretty soon haha.

@Kaona: You can’t have given up TextFugu 2 years ago… Back then it wasn’t even a twinkle in little Dashfugu’s eye :P

    My newest keyboard project:
[Silence Before the Storm - FFX - Nobuo Uematsu]
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO86hl1g6CA

I only started learning to play keyboard last year and only properly got into it a couple of months ago, so you can see that trying to learn this song is utter hell! XD

@winterpromise31: I’ve never even left the UK, so don’t feel bad :P

Don’t think it would be that useful to me. If there are words I don’t know, it’s easier for me just to Rikaikun them haha

I’m going to what the North Americans would call “freshman year of college” pretty soon too (mid-September is when we start here) :) They have a beginners’ Japanese class at the University I’m going to, but, closer to the time, I’m going to email the department and see if there is any chance I could take a more advanced class – a whole semester of possible roumaji + kana learning just doesn’t appeal to me :P This would be an “outside” course (a “minor”?) to go alongside Computer Science (“major”?). Sorry I can’t give you any answers since I haven’t been in the situation yet, but I just thought I’d reveal myself as a member of the club hehe. I guess most colleges/universities will teach things differently.

@missingno15: That’s RTK paying off again – I knew that word was “translator” without actually knowing it haha :)
And instead of calling yourself a “Beginner”, can you not choose a *different* one of their songs to name yourself after, just for a little variety? Perhaps “Baby! Baby! Baby!” or “Bingo!”? “Bingo!” was his name-o, after all.

    (I kid, I kid)

@Dazanan: But if she doesn’t know any Japanese, she might hear「いいえ」as “yyyyeah”, which could have some bad consequences :P

The supplement actually takes it up to 3020 ;) Although, one of those cards on koohii is the old form of “cage”, which doesn’t actually appear as a *separate* frame in the supplement (some of the new kanji have simplified forms but Heisig shows you the old ones just for reference). The people on koohii must have just added that one to make it a nice round number hehe

I finished RTK 1 and am using TextFugu for some readings. Yeah, readings aren’t always that important and you *can* just kinda pick them up, but I feel that doing the TextFugu kanji section just makes some vocab-learning that little bit easier. Obviously, if you choose to work through TF kanji, don’t bother with radicals or the writing bit – kinda the point of RTK, no? :P

Btw, if you aren’t using the 6th edition of RTK, you may wanna check out the supplementary kanji document (about 150 more kanji were added to the Jouyou in December, so he wrote entries for them [some are already in RTK 1 + 3]). Also, it’s free (whether you bought OR just “acquired” it) :)

Not really *that* much catching up to do with the forum; it’s been near-dead since you left… ;)

    Oh, and welcome back haha

Today I learned that the character Guru-Guru – from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (who you may know better as “that weird windmill guy from Ocarina of Time”) – gets his name from the onomatopoeic 「ぐるぐる」[turning round and round; going around in circles] :D

Welcome to the TextFugu community. Please enjoy your stay ;)

Why, when it comes to words like “Mars” and… some others I can’t remember, the カタカナ form is with a ス instead of a ズ (マルス as opposed to マルズ)? Is it the same reason they use キャ instead of カ: they’re just weird like that? :P

in reply to: Dumb question about hi-tech stuff #14229

Japanese IMEs don’t recognise “ti” as being 「ティ」because there is a different roumaji system some people use where ち = ti, し = si and つ = tu. Personally, I think it’s pretty stupid, but some people, for whatever reason, use it.
