I’m working on the verbs – after an intense study weekend (I can’t stand writing critiques. If it were up to me, everyone would have four stars). I hope to have a good grasp of it by the end of the week. Download the Anki Sentence decks which are very nice. I’m working hard to work through the dip.

I read Koichi’s letter to Santa, composed in complete Katatana, able to translate it fairly easily.

    Very funny stuff.

I’m getting better with my カタカナ – and lang-8 has been a big help. My friends list has been very helpful and encouraging.

I’m not all the way there yet with my カタカナ but when I went back to read the entry of this alphabet system, I found myself able to read the heading.

    Very clever, Koichi. Very clever.

I’ve spent this holiday weekend (it’s Canadian Thanksgiving tomorrow) learning Katakana. I’m up to the T-row, and realkana.com has been a great help.

For some reason, I’ve been watching videos of “Panel de Pon” (パネルでポン) all weekend. Maybe I just want to play the game. But what is also interesting is its use of hiragana and katakana. I find myself reading and recognizing words, which in turn helps with my reading speed. I can’t read all the kanji, but lucky, it doesn’t use all that much. Even the North American version, Tetris Attack, features of the names of all who made the game in both English and Kana – I found that to be so adorable.

I still have a ways with Katakana, but I’m sure that won’t take too long. I wish I could improve my speaking skills, but I suppose I’m content with learning the basics for now. At least my writing will be halfway decent. I’m pretty sure that at this rate, I might even be able to test out of the basic japanese course at the college I wish to attend, and either get into the accelerated first year course, which is only one semester and then you move on to Intermediate Japanese 1, or maybe even Intermediate Japanese itself. We’ll see.

I’m listening to Steve Job’s commencement speech. I really need to hear these words right now, and it’s very inspiring.

As a (Chicago) Bears fan, I approve the video. It’s got me pumped up for the morning.

With a toddler, five classes, and a lot of “outside influences”, it’s only my first month, but I have to keep reminded myself to do the work, and keep it going – even if that means I’m studying the kanji while my son climbs all over me. It’s really easy for me to lose interest in anything, so that’s why I’m “forcing” myself to keep studying, even if that means all I do is listening to “AKBINGO” all evening. hey, at least I’m honing my Japanese listening skills.

I’m just going to keep going and JFDI.

I found out about japaneseclass.jp from another thread and signed up for it last night. I’ve already completed tests for lessons one and two on level one. I received a perfect score for lesson two, but I missed three questions on lesson one. Why? Because they were in Katakana, which I haven’t reached in textfugu yet.

    Oi.

Time to finish three-stroke kanji and the last chapter in season two so I can start to enjoy some katakana goodness.

Also, encountering “二つ” on some random Japanese page last night (probably lang-8 because I’ve been on there a lot lately” and having a good idea of what it meant made me smile. I’m starting to recognize some kanji!

I usually spend about a half hour to an hour studying my decks, depending on if my son wants to play by myself or insists on having a toy car drag race (he wins every time).

I’m very happy every time I study Japanese. The jobs anki deck seems to be getting to me lately because some of the other words doesn’t seem to gel with me. I will do my best to remember, and I even bought a journal to write down the words that give me the most trouble. I guess I’m just so excited over my study, I hope that I can keep the momentum going.

Haha, I’m the same way. On some days, I’ll studying Japanese while listening to Japanese radio online or watching shows on Youtube, and other days, if I get through all my Anki decks to keep up with things, I feel like I’ve done a good job!

I’m wondering if I’m overdoing it.

I’m studying one and two stroke radicals, one and two stroke kanji, have noun lists 1-3, and I have my own personal noun list.

I have the job list two, but with all the other lists I’m using, some of the job meanings just aren’t sinking in.

And I’m halfway through Season two, insisting using わたし instead of あたし, even though I really want to use the later (because I used to be a mindless shoujo fan girl, it’s true, it’s true).

I’ve managed to balance my motherhood duties, my schoolwork (first year university), and my Japanese studies, insisting on JFDI, but I have to wonder if I’m overdoing it. I don’t want to take a break because I’m afraid I’ll give up, but I am worried.

I feel like I should put my two yen in.

I am new to Textfugu, but I’ve known about it for a few months, and I have learned so much in the month I’ve been here, as opposed to all of my other methods of learning Japanese over the years. I can see how “Old Timers” feel, but seriously, I don’t think Koichi is getting a lot of credit here. He’s the only one working on this online textbook – and this isn’t his only project. And while the medium isn’t traditional, the concept of continuously editing a textbook until it’s at a suitable level and has good readability isn’t. (It’s even longer if it’s just one person working on it). The average traditional textbook takes approximately five years to publish and can cost about as much as a forever account does here. And by learning Japanese traditionally (especially in a university environment), one will pay that $120 time and time again, maybe even more, every four months.

What I’m trying to say is that Koichi is doing the best that he can, and that’s a lot more than some people are doing in this planet. There will be an inevitable “editing process” when writing a “textbook” – traditional and internet. I can understand how he’d want to go back to the basics and clarify/add/edit things. We don’t all learn at the same pace, and we don’t all get things at the same rate. So it makes sense that the basics would be perfected before more advanced lessons are brought it. I never saw Textfugu as the be all to end all anyway – I plan to study Japanese in university, so I’m sure I’ll be focused on that and I won’t be on here as much anymore…maybe.

So yeah, I trust Koichi. He knows what he’s doing, and it shows through his lessons. I’m sure there will be advanced material coming along, and I’m sure the advanced students won’t be disappointed. You can’t please everyone, and that seems to be true here.

I assure you, I’m not Textfugu groupie. :)

This weekend was busy. I learned 1-2 stroke kanji, as well as the particle は. I’m working on the chapter about “Identity”, but to be safe, I think I will go through the chapters again, as well as my kanji.

My Anki had a lot to eat this weekend!

Nice to know that I am in season two now as opposed to season one. Working on the one and two stroke radicals as well as asking questions. At this rate, I hope I’m able to write a few sentences on lang-8.

It’s hilarious, because my son is trying to learn with me. He can kind-of sing the Japanese version of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” (きらきらぼし)and says some words. Though he insists on pronouncing いただきます”Ticky-Tocky Mass!”…I’m not kidding.

    Japanese is fun. :)

I started on the Dakuten yesterday, and it was very easy. I can remember what sounds they change into, including the H-row. I will practice on Real Kana before class today.

And I went to listen to some Japanese radio stations to immerse myself, and picked one playing old school R&B music from the States. My little heart soared LOL

I did the drag and drop hiragana today for the first forty-six hiragana. I managed to do it in one minute forty seconds (yay). I feel confident that I can recognize most hiragana, now it’s time to work on the dakuten.

I’m using the app Japanese Tracing: Hiragana to help with stroke order. It’s lovely.

So glad I got the forever account. I just love it. I’m learning a lot, and it should be interesting to see how things go once I enter an University Japanese class.
