when watching anime/dramas, do you think it really matters if subs are on?
sometimes i find myself enjoying t more without subs, because when subs are on, i’m always reading the text, and trying to match it in my head to what they’re saying.. then i get distressed when it doesn’t sound the way i expect haha
ok well… it’s going to be a task in itself to root out what i need and don’t need. i’ve decided i’m going to start RTK today – keep going on my merry way with textfugu, an yes – take certain things that sound fun from AJATT
it just sounds so tempting.. fluency in 18 months..
but then i see things like.. “10,000 hours of japanese audio”.. and my brain melts a little in preparation…
OH – also, something i’ve noticed is that each time i find a cool, new, method that is supposed to work good and is different from the rest of the pack.. it always seems to undermine what i was doing/planning on doing before.
textfugu undermines traditional classes, AJATT undermines textfugu.. traditional classes would appear to undermine the other two..
sooo many choices!
yeah i’ve been scoping out AJATT and i’m liking what this guy is saying… though, he’s pretty much saying drop EVERYTHING (language classes – even the grammar points that you would likely learn on here) .. so that’s kind of hard to deal with.
and i just quit my job so i could literally study japanese full time until august 24th (it’s really all i want to do, and i was quitting for school anyways) so i literally have a month of NOTHING going on.. i’m gonna dive in. he says roughly 25/kanji a day will get you three months.. if i go crazy and cramcramcram… who knows how much i’ll get done.
i suppose i’ll be dropping my studies on the other things like vocab for now and plow through RTK, if it’s supposed to be more beneficial. the guy says to go from RTK 1, right to 3.. so yeh
and again, i’m definitely taking a bunch of japanese classes during college, so it’ll be interesting to balance everything out. i’m definitely not going to be able to have fun learning if my school teaches with the same archaic methods that are supposed to be typical of what i’m about to start..

hmmmm ok, this sounds pretty interesting….
i do have a few questions though (not sure if you’re able to answer them all)..
first off, how long would something like finishing the books take? I understand everyone goes at their own pace.. but i mean.. is it a several-year in the making endeavor? totally fine if it is.. it IS another language, after all. or, is it some super fast miracle technique that only takes a few months? (generally speaking)
second off, does this method emphasize drawing the actual kanji characters? textfugu doesn’t have you write up the kanji, but would i have to memorize stroke order, etc?
and lastly, can i just do this in the background of all my other learning? like, should i try to blow through it all first before tackling other stuff?
oh oh also, will i be fine not learning the on’yomi and kun’yomi? if i don’t know how it -sounds-, i’ll probably have to backtrack and figure out what they actually sound like, right?
sorry for the barrage of questions.. haha. i’m just kind of hooked by the mouth now.. i just need to be reeled in .. so to speak.
Thanks!

Thanks i appreciate it guys!
D-Rock yeah i noticed the resources page and was thinking about giving them a look. soo many choices though!
Revenant, i am very interested in RTK, and was curious about the differences from textfugu, because i heard they were.. -kind of- similar.
and i can’t for the life of me figure out how to PM people on here.. i’ve been to your profile and whatnot but haven’t seen the “PM” or “message” link or anything lol
yeah if you’re going to school the least you can do is gear it towards what you enjoy – best you can, at least.
Also, i’m not sure how testing out of a class works – GPA-wise but i wouldn’t mind chilling in an easy class for a semester to boost my GPA a little… ya know?
yeah see i’m afraid of those things Revenant is talking about.. I have a really good grip on season 1 of textfugu.. that makes it sound like i could at least bypass the first semester.. lol.
I feel ya Sheepy. I feel like i need a classroom setting to be able to test what i know against the other people around me, maybe if only to confirm how well i’m doing. Sure, i’m sitting here, just starting season 2, being told how easy the first semester is going to be, but maybe hardcore drilling the most basic of basic will only help.
also, my major is East Asian Studies, and i want to do the whole study abroad – then most likely play the Gaijin Sensei role for a few/many years.. SO, i’m taking japanese as a minor.. i’ll be subjected to this archaic way of teaching (worst case scenario) for a long time…. so that’s why i brought up the question from the first post.. because i at the very least have a couple/few years of japanese classes ahead of me..
Ah ah ok. well now i’m thinking… my Japanese 101 class description says it only covers 25 kanji in the first semester…. what a difference. not to mention thanks to Textfugu i’m already associated with a good number more than that..
though they’ll probably be teaching the “basic” ones, or whatever.
I’m taking Japanese as a Minor, and I figured that even if i already technically know some things covered, i have no actual conversational experience.. so i’m going to spend a lot of time grabbing people and having them talk with me about stuff lol.. no rush i guess
Thanks everyone for the input!
@Mars yeah, i think it’ll be ok… now that i think about it, i was more worried about the kanji.. you know, learning about it in the dreaded fashion of pure repetition.. but i’ll maybe try to take them on using Koichi’s method.. haha
and thanks i’ve only been on here for about a month total. i love the community aspect.
@ Mister I was curious about the entire semester of kana + romanji.. i’m not exactly sure what my college does, but i’ll end up pulling my hair out if this is the case. i remember having a friend in JPN101 and by the end of the semester, all he knew were phrases in romanji… *shiver* what a horrible waste of time. everyone should come here to Textfugu if that’s how school will be spent lol..
@Kaona very sound advice, and i really appreciate it. this will definitely be how i end up handling my japanese education. (i mean the part where you give advice haha, not the first part.)
@ Dazanan i got kind of lucky.. i was a really bad high school student, but then picked up my education for college, and the program i’m in will send me to japan for a semester for study (assuming i can keep my grades up)…so realizing there are people in a position who can’t always do what they want, i’ve been hoarding education/knowledge/grades like a bear hoards food in december haha
and counting all the blessings
