I'm a quarter Japanese, my grandmother was from Okinawa and never taught her children or grandchildren Japanese, she mainly spoke Okinawa-ben. But I am encouraged to learn for my own sake, as my wife and in-laws are from Japan. I am going to see myself through to learn Japanese so my wife doesn't have to translate what her family says to me and vice-versa.
