I just found the students to be really slow sometimes… how many times did she have to say to the guy ‘Make the word sound long… coooheeee, not like how we say coffee’ and he’s still pronouncing it like in English, with short vowels??
But yeah, it is very helpful once you get used to them. Everything you learn is used over and over again, drawing back old words into new contexts. I like it.I used to use Michel Thomas too… haven’t finished the course yet though (started to get a bit annoyed with the format to be honest… all of their voices grated on me after a while, especially the female student). Will finish it at some point though, as I learnt quite a lot.
I had the same problem until very recently… I’m halfway through Season 2, and had imported all the relevant kanji decks. Some of it was fine, but the kanji vocab was throwing me completely. I just found myself cycling through the same cards again and again, without ever really remembering them.
I decided that I had clearly missed something, or tried to run before I could walk, so I suspended any cards that were causing me problems for now (pretty much just the kun readings and that katakana card, just as you have done), ignored Anki completely for a while, and went back through it all again on the lessons.
Looking through the kanji pages, I realised I hadn’t devoted enough time to learning the Kunyomi at all. You are correct, there are no mnemonics for the Kun readings, as it’s essentially vocab. It’s just gonna take pure memorisation, same as nouns, verbs etc.Are you taking any sort of notes to revise from, or is it just Anki and the lessons on here that you are using? I find writing things down really helps me remember them, so I’ve started making my own revision notebook. At the moment I’m devoting an A5 page to each Kanji and its readings, so I can see them all at a glance whenever I have a few minutes to spare.
For me, I can’t use Anki effectively until I am a bit more familiar with what is on the cards. Cycling through the same unfamiliar cards over and over does nothing to help me recall them at all. That could just be me though… I hope you find a method that helps you to remember them. Try not to get too frustrated, it will all click eventually!
(apologies for the lack of hiragana, I’m on my work computer!)
Oooh thanks for all the suggestions guys! We’re waiting until we get them on Sunday to really decide, to make sure what we choose suits them.
At the moment, my housemates really want to call them Daphne and Celeste (anyone from the UK will probably remember the atrocious girl group… ) but I’m being stubborn ^^
I love the whole tokidoki thing… it’s so cute. Also been playing with the name Luna for the black one, as she looks a lot like the cat from Sailor Moon (lame I know lol).Ahhhhh that’s also one of my favourite words! Didn’t think to use it in terms of a name, but it works well actually! Even translated it sounds quite sweet as a name.
That’s going on the list fo sho.Much better than ‘Cash and Carrie’ as they were previously known. Ew.
I hate the whole fish legs vs volcano thing… I always pick the wrong one on Anki :(
I think I may have to sell my soul in order to afford the trip I want to do… I work full time, but unfortunately living in London on crappy entry level TV company wages means I can’t even pull myself out of my overdraft at the moment, let alone save up thousands for a holiday.
Maybe it can be a retirement visit… :(
wow, that’s an epic list… thankyou for posting! I’m going to check those out now! ^^
Nah that’s awesome… I always get a little sad if I see someone’s introduction sitting there for too long without a welcome message! Spread the love!
You’ll probably find that you progress quicker once you’re out of season 1, as you’ve put the time in to learn the basics. The basic grammar that’s coming is super easy to get your head round (well, so far… I’m only halfway through season 2 haha) so you’ll speed ahead a bit I’m sure ^^
I got a 3DS for Christmas too… I’ll definitely be looking that one up.
I really struggled with the passion list… Japan is my real passion, so ruling that out was kinda hard. Although now thinking about it properly, I could probably do Japan in general as a list, as that wouldn’t be ‘Japanese’ as such. Something to try this weekend I guess.
I tried to do photography as a list but most of the words were coming out in katakana, which I haven’t learnt yet. Booo.@Carlie – Don’t be so down on yourself for being in Season 1! I’ve seen you say it a few times now, so honestly… the best thing you can be doing is cementing Hiragana into your brain. The more time spent doing that, the easier everything else will be when you move on. It’s awesome that you have the discipline to stick at doing it until it’s perfect! I wish I had that sort of concentration… then maybe I wouldn’t be stumbling every time I see た or は or にor な (those four always take an extra second to process!) it’s my own damn fault :P
Noobs unite! ^^
@Andrew Marcec… it’s like you read my mind, while I was constructing my epic post :P
Btw, this is what I’ve been looking at… http://www.magicaljapan.co.uk/
Though that’s from the UK, it’s a rough idea of what I was getting at, for anyone not UK based. Hope I’m allowed to post that link, please mod me if not!- This reply was modified 12 years, 10 months ago by ooh_a_robot.
Wow I didn’t spot this thread… forum is swamped with introductions at the moment.
It’s gonna be a long time before I can afford to go there, but I’ve already been planning/reading up on everything I’d need to know.Question though…
I’ve been toying with the idea of doing a trip which half consisted of a guided tour (maybe a week), and the rest of the time (another week or more) spent exploring by myself.
The tours I liked were a wee bit expensive, but took you to so many amazing places. There was a lot of free time to wander about by yourself, but the main thing I liked the idea of, was having somebody pointing me in the right direction all the time. One thing I’m scared of, is going to Japan and missing out on so many amazing places/things, just because I got lost, or didn’t even realise they existed. Some things on the tour I wouldn’t know where to begin arranging by myself.Does anyone else think this sort of thing would be worthwhile? Or just a monumental waste of money? I’m very undecided, and skeptical about my own skills as a trip planner!
That also brings up another question… what would be everyones expected budget for a Japan visit? Excluding flights, as that would vary depending where you’re all from! Joel, you said you spent $AUS 3333, did you expect to spend that much/more/less?
I think only Koichi would hold the answer to that one…
