I started learning Japanese as just a small hobby and I wasn't that serious about it at first. Mainly I wanted to know how it worked because I love learning about other cultures, especially Chinese and Japanese. After learning about the Kana and Kanji and how Japanese uses them, I started getting hooked on it. Living in Louisiana, I worked at a Sushi restaurant owned and operated by all Chinese (ironic). I was scared at first to try and show them that I knew some Kanji and/or had interest in the Chinese writing system, I worked up the guts to show them a few and ask them questions about meanings and they were thrilled that an American knew even just some Kanji/Hanzi. The more I talked and the closer I got with them as friends, the more encouragement it gave me to learn more Japanese. Even though they were Chinese, I learned that through practice I could learn more and more, so here I am now.
