Im still pretty low level to be honest, although I’m at the point where if a Japanese person speaks to me about an everyday subject at full speed, I can get it. That makes me pretty happy. I’m about a year and a half into my studies, since I started seriously. Although probably more like 2 years.

I think you could definitely quickly draft out a few Japanese lessons and when you get back into the office you can clean them up and add media etc.

A billion technical specific vocab that isn’t at all useful for everyday life from Gundam Origin.

    Also

見殺し [みごろし] (n), letting (someone) die without helping

Hey, let me expand on this grammar point. The ちゃう form basically implies that something was done, or completed, but was either out of your control or was regrettable. When I say out of your control I mean like “oh damn, I ate like 12 hamburgers”. lol

Thus, its normally linked to bad/naughty/negative things lol.

Oh and yeah なきゃ~ makes things so easy. Although you should remember its only an abbreviated form of なければ and not ならない. However the ならない is still implied.

Welcome to the forum! Don’t wait until you’re 18 and go “oh I wish I learnt a language while I was young!”

If you can find Japanese television streams, they’re probably the best, because seeing someone talk gives you hints because of expression and body movement. Although Keyhole is ok, the quality is very iffy.

There are a few ways. For instance in English, we’re lucky because we have easy shape recognition, but since Kanji are all roughly a square-ish shape then its harder.

To a degree they use shape recognition and also context. Beyond that, sometimes they have trouble reading kanji too. For yourself I also recommend zooming in.

Insanely common kanji, incredibly useful. 天ぷら is pretty great.

Plenty of dictionaries, Jim Breen’s included, have quite a lot of non-pg13 material. I don’t think any reference to that action is ever included in a PG-13 rated feature. :P

A few misconceptions too. Most people are beginners, so its rare to hear anyone speak Japanese. We speak in English, although maybe one or two of us will type in Japanese. (its easier lol)

Also you don’t have to talk, there are plenty of people that come in and just type ^^

Im pretty lucky, my course is pretty good. We definitely move at a challenging pace. Our textbook is minna no nihongo which is 100% in Japanese.

However I can confirm that its likely that your entire first semester will be based around kana. If you have a really good grip of kana and the VERY beginnings of Japanese, you could easily skip it.

One of the best parts for me however is motivation. Being around a teacher, and classmates (who beyond first year are all great) and being able to talk to my teacher is a huge motivator to me. I also don’t want to let my teacher down or be outdone by other students. (im competitive >->)
