Thanks for your response, but saying common phrases aren’t useful is really off the mark. I’m not talking about learning phrases like “Do you speak Japanese?” I’m talking about ones like I mentioned such as hello, goodbye, good day, good night, please, thank you, i dont understand, etc etc. These are all very, very basic staples of learning any language and are extremely common. I’m quite suprised these aren’t included as vocabulary in the Textfugu lessons. And yeah, I know a few of them, like こんいちは and ありがとう, but I also know there are many different greetings, a handful of different forms of “thank you”, depending on how polite you want to be, etc, lots of things I need to learn. It’s like you said, there are different ways to say everything, but in following with Koichi’s 80-20 rule (which is a pretty practical concept) I know that there are many common ways people are going to say things and you will usually hear them that way. These phrases have proven absolutely detrimental in having conversation with foreigners in my other language backgrounds. I would have gotten nowhere without being able to say simple things like “good evening” “how are you?” “please” “thank you” “see you later” “have a great day” etc. You get the idea. I want to be sure I can say these things in Japanese in the proper way, which makes it tricky to just look them up on Jisho.org because it doesn’t do the best job explaining which ones are appropriate for what situations. This is why I feel I need another resource besides Textfugu, preferably one that is free, as I’m hard pressed for funds right now. A friend of mine recommended “Japanese for Busy People”, but like I said, I’m broke, so for the moment I’ll have to wait on that.

This is definitely something I think Textfugu could use, and if Koichi doesn’t see this post, I might drop a suggestion with him via email some time. In the mean time I’ll check out the resources page you linked to and see what I can dig up there. Thanks for the intel.

@Wiseguy12851 – It does seem like there aren’t as many Japanese in some regions of the US. For example, like you mentioned, most of the Japanese restaurants in my area aren’t run by Japanese people, but in most cases Koreans here in Kansas City. However, we have a huuuge asian supermarket here that is jam packed on weekends and I always see many Japanese people there of all ages speaking Japanese to one another. Since it’s just a grocery store I feel like it would be quite awkward for me to butt in and try to speak to people. I may look into lang-8 later on. Thanks for the tip.

@Andrew – Thanks for the resources. I think I stumbled on one or two of these before, but forgot about them. These will probably be really helpful!

@vanandrew – Hmm, I may have to try your tip if nothing else works out. It may not be a bad idea.

@gigatron – Boy, do I know how you feel. If you want, I could chat with you online on instant messenger if you use one. I don’t even have any friends online to practice my Japanese with.
If you want I’m on yahoo messenger – shininglion at rocketmail dot com
and windows live messenger – shininglion at live dot com

Of course replace the ats and dots with their appropriate symbols @ .

I may have my windows live set up not to accept outside friend requests unless I add someone first, so if you do add me to that one, just email me at the live.com email address and let me know so I can add you too. I have skype as well, though I don’t use it as much. My skype ID is shininglion. Email me if you plan to add me on there because I never log in to it normally. Of course, if you don’t like to use IM or don’t spend much time online, disregard all this. Just giving you the option! ^^

I hope you are able to figure out a way to meet some friends interested in Japanese. Maybe we can figure something out together. Thanks for your input on this!

in reply to: Problems With TextFugu and Google Chrome #26831

I am having the exact same problem as jkl. The Japanese text does not show up in Chrome. There are simply blank spaces where the Japanese text should be. (I’m on Windows Vista with Chrome Version 17.0.963.56 m) Any fix for this yet?

I have found a temporary way around this, for any of you who have Internet Explorer installed on your computer, there is an extension you can download for Google Chrome (Wrench Icon > Tools > Extensions > Get More Extensions) called IE Tab that allows you to open an Internet Explorer based tab within Google Chrome. This way you at least don’t have to leave the Chrome browser and can open the Textfugu pages with the IE Tab feature and see the text properly. I did have to go into the IE Tab Extension’s options menu and set it to have (Internet Explorer 9 Standards), which you must have IE 9 installed in order to use. The IE Tab extension defaults to IE 7 standards, which unfortunately creates the same problem of no Japanese text showing up.

At least those using Chrome can use the IE Tab extension (with some tweaking, noted above) to view these pages until we can find a definite fix.

Well one thing I enjoy about the mnemonics and how they help you learn is that they are a good reminder for when you are first learning. It helps you to stick it in your head and make something completely new and foreign seem recognizable. I find that once you learn the kanji and vocab well enough you can drop the mnemonic story from your memory and the basic meaning of the kanji just sticks. For now, that method has been working well for me. :3

Hi there Heaven. Just thought I’d say hello and welcome. I just got my membership to Textfugu a few days ago. I like to draw anime style stuff too, though all my art is of animal characters. I can’t do humans well. I don’t think I’m even that great at animals haha. Would love to see your art!

Just thought I’d stop by and read your post, since you commented on mine! Welcome! Welcome!

I’ll be reviewing all the season 1 material for the next week or so I think since that’s as far as I got, and I sort of had a break due to holiday madness over the last few weeks. So we are sort of in the same boat. I had finished the season, but definitely need to refresh before I move on to season 2. I added my Yahoo messenger info on my profile here if you want to chat on there. Just click my name under my avatar to see it. Even if we don’t know any real Japanese yet we could still talk about learning the kana, and talk about nerdy stuff like video games and anime. Hehe. Cheers!

Carlie, I understand how ya feel. Haha. I may be treading rather slowly into season 2, as I spent a good amount of time working on the material from season 1, then took a few weeks off to do lots of holiday stuff, and ended up forgetting a lot of what I learned. I had the hiragana down pretty well (and katakana too), and now I can’t remember either one too well! I will probably just try to strengthen my hiragana for now though since katakana is covered in season 3. I had gone ahead and learned katakana after I finished season 1 and was waiting to have the money for membership. I may just hold off on reviewing katakana until I get to season 3. That might make it easier.

But yes, I’ll let you know when I’m feeling more comfortable and ready to talk to people online! Good luck to you as well! :)
