Thanks for the advice, I think you’ve pretty much summed it up, I need people I can talk with. A couple of years ago I used to meet once a week on a weekday morning with a friend in our office in Japan via Google Hangouts. He wanted to improve his English and I wanted to practice Japanese. It was horrible for me as I just couldn’t say anything, so we stopped doing it.

I’ll try Teamspeak at some point, port seems to be blocked on my firewall currently.

    Cheers

Thanks! I’m actually lucky enough to have been to Japan 4 times in the last 3 years which is why I’m so embarrassed about my inability to construct sentences under pressure. My only real success has been buying Tokkaido line tickets to Kyoto in Shibuya station, even buying coffee at Starbucks or Tully’s usually ended in tears.

I’m here because I need some structure to my learning. It’s been all over the place so far and I still find it very hard to construct anything more than very basic sentences. I’m also unable to understand anything that anyone says to me, except with friends who take pity on me and speak とてもゆっくり。 I’ve actually resisted TextFugu in the past because I thought it might be too basic, but the price was such that it seemed worth giving it a try.

I’m expecting that my Japanese will be better for spending time here and that some of the things that I keep on learning over and over will finally stick in my head.

    Cheers
