For 食, i’ve only seen it in a compound or as 食べる or 食べ物　etc..
As a matter of fact, I am more familiar with the term 和食 than 日本食 but I’m sure they’re both accurate.

As for 人気がある, some verbs don’t always take simply な or だ. Another example that comes to mind is 自身 (じしん) or confident/confidence. With this adjective/noun one also used がある. But your translation works. Hitom’s job is popular.

chin is a common suffix i’ve heard used mostly just for young girls (more cutesy than chan)

as for rin, I can’t say I’ve heard it used as a suffix, but indeed sometimes as a nickname.

in a sense, it’s kinda true. like 到着　and 着く both mean arrive (technically the former means arrival but can be paired with する to mean “to arrive”)

I think the same is also true with 危険　and 危ない

I’d always thought that the first was along the lines of DANGER as it might be on a sign, and the second as somebody telling or warning that something is dangerous. If I’m wrong somebody please correct me.

Exactly. a な-形容詞 is basically treated as a noun unless な is added as a suffix. い-形容詞 are generally treated as adjectives unless the さ suffix is added. So, in a sense 危険 is danger and 危ない is dangerous.

By soft cast I mean they made a hard half mold, if you will. then held it in place by wrapping bandages all around it. so technically it was half hard (under my arm and palm) and half soft (around the back of my forearm and back of my hand). I broke my hand in february, so this is what they gave me.

as for bleeding, I would say more casually, 血が出る is what I always hear people say for bleeding.

One great one that I read over an over is the top row, 4th from the left. “Oxford Japanese: Grammar and Verbs”. I got it back when I lived in Canada but it was great to get me started. Note: it has no furigana, instead it has everything in English, Kanji and Romaji.

The middle row, the three books on the left really helped me get ready for JLPT N3. But they need a little extra explanation to clarify some subtle differences in similar grammar.

Minna no Nihongo was ok as a beginner text book. I did all of book 1 and a good portion of book 2.) I couldn’t find it now).

I really like one of my latest books. It was a gift from one of my students. Middle row, far right. It’s ALL about Keigo. But it is also 99.9% in Japanese. Only a few words have English translations. (There is some furigana too to help out)

Finally, I just got into a good shadowing book. Top row, 5th from the left. Only done a few units, but it’s great for me to try to sound more natural. Doing ondoku practice is so important if you want any hope of sounding more native. Of course you don’t need a book, any listening resource with a script and translation and mobility is great, but this text has so many situations with different social status ranging from family together, friends, co workers, bosses etc.. It looks great, I can’t wait to get more into it.

I haven’t been on in a while either. I never see this thread updated so I tend to think it is dead anyways.
I may try hopping on again in the near future, but it’s tough with my timezone to bump into others too.
