IMO The Google IME is the best wat to go about it. As far as typing goes all IMEs are about the same.
    a,i,u,e,o,ka,ki,ku,ke,ko, etc

The only thing is for typing the smaller characters (mainly in katakana) you type “x” first (if the don’t come up automatically):
    ァ:xa
    ィ:xi
    ゥ:xu
    ェ:xe
    ォ:xo

し is either shi or si
ち is either chi or ti
ぢ is either dzi or di
つ is either tsu or tu
づ is either dzu or du

(There is a lesson on this early on in textfugu, isn’t there?)

But you should say 日本語がまだ上手になってない。 Or I’m not good at Japanese…yet.

Aced it. You could also say 私は日本語が下手です。 Which would be closer to “I am poor at Japanese.”

Also, the old categories of Mature, Young and New have been replaced with Mature, Young, Learn and Relearn. The difference between New and Learn is that Learn has (by default) a very small interval (10 mins) so you will see it a few times in a review session. Also failures during the “Learn” stage don’t count towards making a card a leech. This means that you can study new things in anki as opposed to it being strictly for review without screwing up all you ease factors and whatnot. The relearn category is where failed cards go and uses really short intervals like the learn category.

The first thing I would suggest is combining all your decks into one (or just a few like kanji, radicals, vocab and sentences for example) and not have 50 different decks. More than just being less of a hassle to deal with, this is also better for your learning. By having things separated, you run the risk of forming useless relationships that artificially boost your success rate for cards; you start to think “I’m in deck A so I know, to some degree, what cards to expect.” Secondly, find time to study throughout the day. I know Koichi suggests not studying if you have internet of tv or anything else going on and to isolate yourself in your happy study zone. While I agree for active study, for reviews, it’s not needed. If you are in the middle of something else and can find the time to take 2 or three minutes to buzz through some reviews, you’ll find you have no problem keeping up with hundreds of reviews a day. Thirdly, as long as you are reviewing, you shouldn’t be moving backward, meaning that if you take a day or two off from adding new cards and keep up with your reviews, it’s no big deal. In terms of lessons/day…I really have no idea, that’s up to you, but I don’t think it’s terribly important. One of the benefits of self-study as opposed to classes is that you can go at your own pace. If you feel like a machine one day and power through 10 lessons and add 200 flashcards to find yourself swamped later, take it easy for a few days and jump back in. There’s nothing wrong with binging and purging as long as you keep up with your reviews.

Remember the good old days when cloze-deletion went under the much more humble name, fill-in-the-blank? The problem for me with CD decks (or even sentence decks) is there is too much context. I see some word in the sentence that reminds me of the answer even if I don’t understand what’s going on. Not that I’m saying you shouldn’t use them; I just always feel like I’m cheating. For example, if a sentence is testing a particular particle usage and starts with something that I recognize (maybe 3月の1日に。。。), then I see the beginning and relate the correct answer without even having to understand or even to read the whole sentence. I can just think “Oh, its the March 3rd card. The answer is には.” I’m still trying to think of a way around this that doesn’t involve starting with a deck of ten billion cards just so I can’t memorize the answers. That’s been the problem for me trying to use anki to study things other than kanji and vocab.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Too many reviews! I went to Osaka with some of the other teachers this weekend and didn’t keep up. 518. It’s not the most I’ve ever had but still a lot. I’d better stretch first.
