Welcome to Textfugu, hadashi… you took your time!!! ;)

Better late than never, eh? I, too, have tried on-and-off to learn Japanese and spent a considerable amount of time re-learning stuff I’d already gone through.

I hope this site make things a bit easier for you. That you can apply what you learn straight away (and hopefully get constructive criticism from your wife?) and that you already can recognise some kanji will make it easier for you.

How are you and your family settling into life in Japan? I’m hopefully moving to Okinawa next Feb (visa depending) and would appreciate any tips/advice. Are you still working as a teacher?

Lovely to meet you (*waves* also to budonoseito)

    Hi Sven,

I second what the ladies above have already said… any reason to learn Japanese is a good reason! I have friends that are obsessed with manga, anime, cos play, etc but are too lazy to learn the language.

    Good luck with your studies!

WOW! What an inspiring post. I have to admit, I hadn’t actually heard of him as I’ve been living under a rock the last few years! I have now, though, And feel inspired to go and study hard…

I like what he says about leaving your comfort zone… ‘the comfort zone’ is a very nice, safe place, but it ain’t going to help you achieve your ambitions in life. I like Danny’s philosophy

Well good luck to both Armando and Winter with your studying.

Qualifications are important but what you’ll get from studying Japanese (as well as any language) will benefit you long after you’ve received your official ‘piece of paper’ ;-P

    Welcome to Textfugu, Armando.

You will hear from so many adults, including me, “I wish I had learnt Japanese at your age”. We are all ‘oldies’ (I am 30 years old) and it isn’t a cliche that we all say the same. It is so important to learn a language and it is awesome that you have made a commitment to better your language skills. I salute you!

You’ll find loads of helpful people here in the forums, so any problems, just ask.

Sorry to go off topic, but I have a question @Winter… Do you plan on taking GCSE Japanese? Can you? I just wondered. My friend’s sister self studied/had a weekly tutor and took GCSE Italian when she was in Year 10 and got an A*. She’s just finished her GCSEs and took German at school and is pretty sure she did enough for a B/C. Maybe the school system isn’t great at teaching languages, eh?

Anyway, good luck with your studies, Armando.

    Welcome to Textfugu, Stephanie.
I’m sure you and your boyfriend will get a lot out of this experience. Learning a new language really gives you a sense of achievement.
    Good luck with your studying…

    Hello Ryan,

Welcome to Textfugu! Can’t think of any advice… but if you have any questions, there’s some lovely folk about on the forums to help you out.

Good luck with your studies. It’s cool that you are learning together with your girlfriend as you have an instant conversation buddy!

    Hello Lucy,

Welcome to the forums (seems your already acquainted with Textfugu!!!)

Good luck with your Japanese studies. What other languages are you learning/do you already speak?

    in reply to: RTK #11770

I have a question… Has anyone used RTK for the Kindle? Would you recommend it? I’m thinking of getting a Kindle soon as I don’t want to buy ‘physical’ books as I relocate now and then and have enough stuff to cart round with me!
    Thanks ^-^

    Hi Ben,

Well done with your studies so far… keep up the good work for the Level 3 exam. You are an inspiration for a complete ‘life’ overhaul (although I don’t share you enthusiasm for Artic temperatures!)

    Take it easy,
    Emma ^-^

Eh la, EddieB, go’ed, lad! Ha ha, I can mock as I’m not ACTUALLY Scouse (so you can say what you want :-P) Woo, more Brits! I like your motivation for learning; pre-emptive attack before you go. I lived in Costa Rica for a year and there was a whole community of expats that had lived there ages and spoke either little or NO Spanish. Their attitude was like “why bother, everyone speaks English”… it used to really get my goat. My Spanish sucked but at least I was trying… hhrumph!

Ahh… winter… didn’t know you felt that way… you now have some fellow country men and women to keep you company ;-)

I throw a fish in your general direction! :)

You all look so glamourous… don’t do make-up… or posing…

    … there are exceptions! ^-^

in reply to: The Study Thread #11651

Yeah, we are making progress but wish it was at a faster rate than a snail’s pace :( Actually, I read in a running mag the other day that if you have something to learn/revise (language mp3s, for example) listen to it while you’re exercising. You remember it better cos your brain is more alert. I listened to a Pimsleur this morning while out on a run but got a few funny looks off people cos I was muttering to myself *sign* have to remember to use my ‘inside voice’ when doing this!!!

    Sorry… tentative link… snail’s pace~ running… have a tendance to ramble at times! ^-^
