Interestingly the translation given in TF excludes the nuance of that particular conjugation:
“After he gave me the present he went off somewhere.”
Sorry I rushed it, this is the whole sentence:
プレゼントをくれた時、そして宇宙人はどこかに行ってしまいました. (From TF)
I’ll have to look into that, haven’t come across it before. I take it the う changes to い sometimes.

It did strike me as odd when both had the same definition, but nothing to differentiate them.
A related question on periods of time.
で is used to mark a length of time that something occurs. 間 also to get used for a span of time. How do they differ in usage?
My understanding is that 一年半 is ‘one and a half years’ and with 間 after it would be ‘a period of one and a half years’.
Context – you may be right, things do seem to get dropped a lot in the right context.

what’s with the ん after だった? I understand だった, but not sure what the ん does.
