If you’ve got the time and motivation then do it.
I guess what I was trying to get at, is that people can get carried away with what they’ve ‘learnt’, and maybe over-confident and complacent because of that.
Keep re-visiting everything you’ve done.
Also, perhaps rather than doing Anki so much test yourself in different ways.
I think that’ll be more effective than doing the same thing over and over, and be a truer test of having learnt something.Congratulations, that’s brilliant! Can’t wait to watch it.
You mention how the Japanese producer did the translation – that sort of thing has always bewildered me, how the Japanese don’t get more native English speakers to do, or at least help with, their translation to English.
It’s cool in one sense (e.g. it produces this – http://www.engrish.com), but I always think a lot of these mistranslations could be easily avoided, with a little gaijin collaboration.
Any thoughts/comments on this?Everyone’s different…if you’ve got the enthusiasm & motivation, then maybe go with it (you may not always have that!)…however, there’s nothing wrong with going slower, nothing to be ashamed of.
In terms of what you’ve ‘learnt’, it feels like you’ve ‘learnt’ the stuff you did yesterday/recently as you’re very confident with it, but as time passes are you still confident with it?
Welcome
@ k man – I can’t remember, is Eboue still at Arsenal?!
Holland haven’t been great so far, looks like they may not make out of the group, which would be shocking. I read about the Danish fans chanting “Messi” everytime Ronaldo was on the ball, and it really got to him. That’s hilarious, just brilliant.
You’re right, you can survive in Japan without the language with the amount of English around and just knowing how big cities work. That’s fine for a tourist, but if you’re there long term, surely you’d want to make the effort to get more out of your experience, and learn the language, to appreciate it more. I got the impression very few foreigners bothered to learn much – I couldn’t converse, just learning phrases and the locals were shocked that I’d bothered to learn that much.
@ Yggbert – that’s hilarious! Fantastic

What’s happening with WaniKani? Is that available?
Agree about doing your own mnemonics.
Sometimes I’ll change the story in TF’s mnemonic (e.g. in Fat, in Now) to one that’s more obvious to me.- This reply was modified 12 years, 6 months ago by vanandrew.
Saw “Goemon” the other day. It was good.
@ k man – It has been hard to muster up enthusiasm for this tournament, particularly with the prospect that it’ll be low scoring. Spain-Italy was fascinating though in how Italy were able to contain them without being totally negative themselves. Spain are not invulnerable!
You’re probably right about the CL game. That image of Bendtner stopping the goal has never left me, it was so surreal! You’re right about RVP. It’s scary to think what would have happened this season without the bucket of goals he scored.
It’s only a rough plan, but I think it’s good to have some plan to help with study. It’s amazing how they don’t require people to have any Japanese to be able to go teach English – I can’t imagine how people could survive.
@ missingno15 – So you any closer to tracking down AKB?!?!
@ missing – thanks, fascinating
@ Gigatron – “ヲタ”? Is that for ota(ku)? I didn’t realise it got abbreviated like that.
@ Joel – No, not RealKana a different one, I’ve been tearing me hair out trying to find it!!!
The one I’m thinking of had kanji on it as well you could change the font of.@ kman – You looking forward to the Euros?! Nearly here. Unfortunately there’s not much coverage on TV so I won’t see many games.
Wow, you’ve got a great memory to remember that Everton game – amazing.
Was that quarter final the one where Bendtner was standing on the goal line and prevented an Arsenal goal? That was the most surreal thing I’ve seen.
Corporate ticket allocation is a constant problem. Often at the MCG during any sport (Aussie rules, cricket, soccer) you’ll be watching a game and there’ll be rows and rows of empty seats allocated to corporates and unused. It’s a disgrace.
I intend to go back in a couple of years, when my language skills will hopefully have improved last time I could speak enough to survive but couldn’t read at all – I really want to be able to read more!). The teaching English thing is in the back of my mind, anybody seems to be able to do it.
Having said that, there a lot of really cheap budget flights now so I may be tempted to drop everything & go over on short notice!Pretty sure the answers are:
1 – yes
2 – noAlso, is it ever pronounced wo?!
