I think it just varies with people as you say. I don’t think the cake example is applicable for everyone. Music is just acceptable noise, some people study better with music, some better in silence, some with the sound of birds chirping outside. I don’t think you would say the chirping birds are taking away part of the cake, they’re all just noises that put people’s minds into a sate of “learning Zen”.
I think you can relate it to the state of mind people need to be in to sleep as well, some people listen to music to sleep, others silence, etc. Everyone is weird, some more than others. :p

Thanks for the replies on the books. :) One of the things I’m looking forward to most (eventually).
You seem to read quite a bit. Out of the ones you have read which would you recommend the most, to start off the reading journey?
Also, how was Breaking into Japanese literature, and the follow-up?
Ankiは大好きです!
Are you importing into a deck you’ve already created? Or are you going to File—>Import (with no decks open) and creating a new deck?
It might sound silly, but make sure you aren’t importing a deck into itself (I’m not sure if this happens if the decks are the same name as well) as that causes a “file in use” error.
Other than that I’m not sure.
バルバドス, ありがと!
Barbados, eastern-most Caribbean island. Haven’t gotten around to looking it up in Japanese yet. :)
These three are pretty nice, the first two you should be able to find on itunes, and they also have transcripts. They are not instructional, they’re just stories which you can listen to in Japanese. Japenesepod101.com has instructional podcasts.
Podcasts might help? These are pretty easy to understand in terms of how they speak, the subject matter is supposed to be decent for beginners as well but I’m below beginner so I’m not sure. :)
The first two have transcripts.
