Yggbert – Are you finding that recognizing kanji is any easier for you? Are you studying something besides RTK every day? How long has it been since you finished? I’m always interested in how other people view the program.
I don’t think RTK is a total waste of time. I just think it needs to be managed better, not a competition to get to the end of the book. If RTK was studied at a steady pace, with a mind toward what maintenance will be like, I think it’s a great program. I think it’s been extremely beneficial in that I can look at a page of Japanese and not be completely overwhelmed with the squiggles. I know what a lot of the kanji mean and can figure out a good portion of the rest. It’s given kanji a familiarity that makes it less frightening. It’s just not worth plowing through the entire book without taking the time (balanced with other study) to put the kanji in long term memory.
Chigun – It’s definitely not just you! :) Keep at it, keep it manageable, and you’ll definitely see forward progress!
Sheepy – Awesome to see you back. Rumor had it you dropped Japanese but I’m glad to see you’re back. Congrats on the weight loss!
Missing – You just don’t like RTK. :P
I’m not done with my studying tonight but wanted to say that I read a blog post in Japanese and left a comment. My first comment on an all Japanese website. It was nerve wracking. But at least the ice has been broken a tiny bit! Maybe next time won’t seem so scary… lol
Thanks, kanjiman. :) Feels good to be back.
Missing – I’ll take a look at it.
Kept myself to 10 minutes of vocab review. Wouldn’t it figure that my Jpod101 subscription expired today? That’s what I WAS using for my grammar studies. I also found this blog and read today’s post – http://sirokurotubu.blog22.fc2.com/
Welcome and good luck with your studies!
Ok, so I am finally home after spending nine weeks with my in-laws in Michigan. In nine days, I am moving 1,500 miles. And for some crazy reason, I decided NOW is a good time to completely redo my study methods. Huh.
I am sick and tired of making no progress at all. I feel like I’ve been doing little but tread water for the past year and it’s actually RTKs fault. Well, my fault, but RTK was my method of madness. I pushed way too hard on the last 1,000 kanji, became swamped in reviews, quit, became even more swamped, and have spent a year trying to get out of that hole. WHY!?!?!? Such a waste of time. I should have just given up on it earlier.
I’ve suspended almost my entire RTK deck, except the cards I’m actually caught up on. I refuse to spend 60 minutes a day studying vocab and kanji via Anki. And I am diving into Japanese materials. I’m scared to death about it but it’s the only way I’m going to make any progress. Kanji out of context and random vocab is not going to make me proficient at Japanese.
So there’s my new goal. No more than 15 minutes of vocab review in Anki each day. A short grammar lesson. At least 15 minutes per day reading Japanese materials. It’s not a huge commitment, but it’s better than last year’s terrible efforts. It’s a start.
Good luck, everyone!

I’ve recently learned knitting. It’s such fun! Getting to create something from a ball of yarn is so rewarding…
Anyways, welcome to the forum! Good luck with all of your studies!
~CassandraHello and welcome! Good luck with your studies!
~Cassandra
Got in 20 minutes of Anki today. 2,113 cards due. I feel like I’m not making much progress but at least I’m maintaining the progress I’ve already made…
That cake looks really good!!
Janitha, welcome! Good luck getting your reading skills caught up with conversation. I think it’s awesome that you’ve stuck with Japanese for so long.
Good luck with your studies!
CassandraMissing – Sorry to hear about your Lupus. That is not fun. :(
I’m having a hard time fitting in even 20 minutes of Japanese a day. I don’t feel guilty about it, though, since I am trying. Today – 20 minutes, down to 2,185 cards due.
It definitely sounds like a fun idea! Sorry I don’t have any suggestions, but I’m excited to see what you make!
~Cassandra
Noah, welcome! How cool that your family does an international trip and took you to Japan. I’m so jealous! :)
Good luck with your studies! Thanks for sharing your intro with us; I really enjoyed reading it.
