Happy belated birthday! ;)
My family doesn’t care about heritage. I guess we’ve been in the US too long? My mom’s side of the family is from England and Scotland way back when. On my dad’s side, my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark. My great grandmother was from Denmark as well but they met in South Dakota.
I care about heritage, but there’s no one to ask anymore. I think overall my family gets smaller, less kids born each generation. It’s very sad. And since I’m female, my children will be contributing to my husband’s family line. Personally, I think it’s important to understand other cultures even if they aren’t your own. Adoption, I guess!
You guys are doing great with the studying. Keep up the great work!
Jack, welcome to the forums! It’s a bummer that you weren’t able to study back then, but at least you’re here now! :)
Good luck with your studies!
CassandraAwwwww, Michael. That stinks. What about an online class? Is that an option?
LOL. Glad to hear it! :D Have fun!
Welcome, Alicja!
Thanks for the long intro. :D You are already doing great with Japanese! You tackled RTK way earlier than most of us did.
I also fell behind on my RTK reviews, I think about 1300 cards. I didn’t bother climbing out of that hole. I suspended all the cards that were way overdue and kept up with the cards that were not. Slowly, every once in awhile, I reactivate a few of the suspended cards (usually around 20). But I don’t make a big deal out of getting back into those reviews, only keeping up with what is actually current (the other 700).
Instead, I have a deck of cards made up of various vocab I’m picking up around the internet. I add the cards with full kanji and then quiz myself on both readings and English meanings. It’s working for me. RTK helps and I’m refreshing a lot of the kanji I learned via RTK. The RTK meanings aren’t exact anyways, so you sometimes have to relearn the keyword.
Hope this helps a bit! Good luck with your studies!
~CassandraHi Linda – welcome! Good for you for finally making the time to learn Japanese. You’ve got a good start with already knowing kana!
Revenant has some great advice – slow and steady wins the race. Good luck with your studies!

PS – I moved the thread into the intro section for you. ;)Noticed no one has answered your question… are you sending the email to someone and want them to pass it on to your aunt? She doesn’t have an email account, right? Just want to clarify because I’m not certain what you’re asking. :)
Thanks!
Rebecca – welcome! It looks like you’ve been learning a bit from Pimsleur and anime. I hope you find that Textfugu is the resource you’re looking for! If you can stick with it for the long haul, you’ll make tons of progress.
Welcome and good luck with your studies!
~Cassandra
Eek. Her way of teaching is going to make some confused students later when the class starts using kana instead of romaji.
Akikuchiba – welcome, welcome! Happy to see you here. :) TextFugu is a great resource and I’m sure you’ll make tons of progress. I hope to see you around the forums!
~Cassandra
Definitely their loss. TextFugu could make the class a lot easier and help people stick with it. At least you have a definite advantage!
Hello! First of all, you are so lucky to be learning Japanese while you live in Japan. What an awesome opportunity!
If you’re worried about eventual burnout, just monitor how much studying you do. Don’t study for six hours one day and then nothing for the next week. Try to aim for consistency, something manageable for the long haul.
Bummer about not getting the right milk! You’ll figure it out. :)
Good luck with everything!
~CassandraWelcome! It’s good to hear that you’re sticking with it. Good luck with all of your studies!
~Cassandra
With your help? ;)
